Greg Archer over at HuffPost made a list on why everyone loves vampires in 2009. In his list, he mentions the usual suspects (Twilight gets three mentions, Vampire Diaries, etc). True Blood gets four mentions and coming out on top of his list? Our own missing Vampire Bill Compton.
10. True Blood: It sucks–in the best way. And we like that. A ratings and critical hit for HBO, it came off of a wildly fascinating if not thoroughly engaging sophomore season. Beyond the delicious creativity here in this well-produced, well-acted and well-written series, the show managed to reboot the culture’s vampire cravings. But will season three, premiering in 2010, still keep us interested? Chances are … we’ll bite.
4. Alexander Skarsgard: Hot and hunky. What’s not to like? He may play a bad-boy vampire on True Blood, but by now, millions of straight women and gay men wish he can just play one in their bedroom.
2. Anna Paquin: She may play Sookie Stackhouse on True Blood, but Sookie, on some level, represents us — inquisitive and so terribly drawn to the “dark” that will balance the “light.” Sure, we can’t read minds (not all of us, anyway), but what Paquin is able to evoke is a captivating if not rare emotional depth. There’s no character like her on TV. Better still, she makes us care about what Sookie is going through. Not an easy feat for any actress.
1. Steven Moyer: Youth doesn’t always win (sorry Robbie P). The fact is, Steven Moyer as HBO’s hot and haunting vamp in True Blood, has done more for the vampire this decade than T. Cruise did back in the ’90s. Good acting helps. But so do those love scenes. Up next: Let’s hope HBO can create a believable storyline next season when it informs viewers where our dear Bill ended up being ‘napped in that blood-pumping season cliffhanger. (Great last line: “Bill?”)

Of course Stephen Moyer is numero uno as Bill, it may surprise some, but not most. The man is a great actor and way hot!
There’s fad and popular and lots of adjectives to describe temporary infatuations. SM and AP and what they have done with the characters Bill and Sookie (of course with Alan Ball behind it) is measured and skillful. The vampire craze will wane at some point, but these characters have the potential to continue for a long while, as this is so much more than a vampire show. When you watch these programs over an over and each time there’s a new subtlety that becomes evident – there is a real appreciation for their talent.
Cool, I love the Huffington Post and their Sucker Punch recaps of Season 2 were very thoughtful and witty, and not as foul mouthed as mine LOLZ. Good to see a silly vampire list without Edward on top, as he’s major ZZZ’s.
Bravo Huffpost,
I completely agree. Especially that BC/SM is numero uno. How can one not love the character of Bill Compton? He is brooding, introspective, sweet, caring, decent and moral, all wrapped up in a sexy, hot package. SM plays him so beautifully. No comparison with Edward Cullen, IMO, maybe for the tween set, but not for adult women.
Speaking as an adult Male, I also find the character of Billl Compton intrigueing! Because He IS Stronger and wiser and Better than Edward Cullen! Plus He could kick the living crap out oof him, too! Twilight may bbe OK for Teens and Tweens But We know that BOTH Bill And Eric Would eat the Cullens for Breakfast!! LOL
The love story between Bill and Sookie is much more intense that in Twilight! Both Billl And Eric are SO Cool!
So Is Sam in his Own Way!
TrueBlood had me at “Hello~all I had to do was watch one preview commercial for the show in August 2008
and I was HOOKED”!! Then all I had to do was go and get a look at Stephen Moyer’s Bill Compton and then
look at Alexander Johan Haljmar Skarsgard’s sexy Eric Northman and let’s put it this way all I know is that
Oh how I wish those two Vampires were REAL~cause all I want is “Bite me baby”!!! Oh how I can’t wait for
Season 3 to begin in June 2010~ Bring it on!! I’m ready!!.
Really, I still have to say that I had no clue about this show…the marketing did not hit me. Curious that now. But when I did find it (HBO on-demand at a friend’s house) I did realize, quite instantly, that it was for me.
And now that I’m so involved, I wonder, wow… how did I miss the marketing? For really, I had no idea (and Psst, HBO, I am a vampire-book reading geek).
Yes, I only DVR’d it because Anna Paquin was in it and waited a whole month to watch it. When I saw the opening sequence, I thought Oh, it is a smutty show and then with the sex and swearing (bit of a prude!) I thought oh well, will have it on as background whilst doing other things ie computer, ironing etc. I also thought it was corny!! Can you believe I had these thoughts!!!!!! I was going to delete them from my DVR and then I saw the ep where Jason had a big dick due to the V and I laughed and laughed at those scenes and actually watched the episode without distraction!! I then made the momentous decision to start from scratch and fell in love instantly from Ep 1 and the Merlotte scene with Anna turning around and seeing Bill! Was absolutely hooked from then, though still analytical, so had to watch over and over again until I just watched for Bill and Bill and Sookie! I swear I must be the biggest fan!! Not only do I love the show, I love the swearing (think it sounds funny) and boy oh boy do I love the sex!! Only Bill and Sookie sex, as the other sex just seems casual and without feeling. Nothing in this world is like Bill and Sookie sex (other than Bill and Lizzie sex – I wish!!!).
So there!!! ( My friends would smack me if they knew I loved the sex and the swearing so I keep it secret!)
Thank you for posting this and thank you Huffington Post! I have also read previous posts from them and agree with CE, they do a great recap (not as great as CE’s, but do give her a run for her money!).
Hey Lizzie, just so you know, it ain’t a secret no longer.
Hah! Saved by Escape from Dragonhouse!
OK Lizzie the secret is out You need help gal! LOL Its just a good show! I think that You like the rest of us have been “glamored” by it! When I first saw the commercials for it on HBO last summer I was like Oh Right they take off the Sopranos and give us This Crap! When I saw the promo for it “I think we got our first Vampire” I thought it looked cheesy and smutty! I was like OK Vampire Porn HBO Has Really Lost it This time! So Now Vampires drink beer and have sex Whats So special about That I thought So Do a lot of women’s husbands!! LOL I can remember thinking at the time What the hell is this? I remember just keeping it on for a moment or so Lotof blood gore sex nudity This is Gross! I thought So Dont feel bad about being “prudish” I thought it was much too graphic for me at first, too!
The storylines however Are very engaging and once you get into it You realize it ISNT Just About the violence Or the sexual content! Its a Story about people in a small town how they relate to each other
Everyone there has an issue or a secret ! There are NO Perfect people There!
Who would’ve guessed that Sam was a “Shifter” Sookie a Telepath Bill a Vampire with Manners?
Jason a Horndog?? Oh Yeah like a Boneheaded redneck could be Anything else?? LOL
Good on you Antonio!!!
