True Blood on the cover of SciFiNow Magazine issue 62

True Blood has topped the list of shows and movies that SciFiNow magazine is most looking forward to in 2012! There’s a short piece with minor spoilers from Joe Manganiello and Denis O’Hare. Joe says:
“True Blood’s known for it’s extensive storylines and cast, and now this season it’s all starting to come together. There’s a lot of fatality happening right now, and plot lines are intersecting. It’s really intense.”
Denis offers us some insight into how his return as King Russell Edgington will play out, as he says:
“I’m not going to come back to True Blood until mid-March. I had a meeting with Alan Ball next week, and they have devised an amazing trick to allow me to be present, but not fully acting.”
Hmm, I wonder what this could mean?
Also in this issue is an interesting opinion piece on why sci-fi on TV is becoming less mainstream, with shows like True Blood and American Horror Story catering for a fanbase that is predominantly nerdy.
“Lost might’ve attracted a geek crowd, but it doesn’t feel like it was made for geeks. True Blood does. It turns in big numbers, but has a more loyal online following than Lost ever had. It’s a geeky show, even if its audience don’t realise it. It appeals to a specific mentality, one that is categorically nerdy.”
I’m a self-confessed sci-fi geek, but how do other fans of the show feel about being branded as such?

Well, to tell you the truth, I have never been considered Nerdy. I am always been grounded in reality. I enjoy the show, because for me it speaks to the political, religious and other prejudices in our world and addresses it with thought provoking words. I wonder if Howard Zinn or Christopher Hutchens were a fan of True Blood,I would like to think so.
Do you not consider nerds grounded in reality? :)
I can’t really see Christopher Hitchens getting into the whole vampire thing, just didn’t seem him. Zinn, who knows, might have found a social history aspect to it.
I consider Game of Thrones a nerd show, I don’t consider American Horror Story and TB nerd shows, not really. They may be aimed a certain section of viewers but I don’t consider them nerdy.
And after so many mentions of nerdy I now have Weird Al Yankovic’s White and Nerdy going through my head.
well, I am not a geek or a nerd. And I really don’t understand where this guy is coming from. Maybe he has a different definition of geek and nerd than I do???
TB does address social issues for sure. But I think the main draw has to be the romance aspect of the story. Charlaine Harris created vampires who walk among humans, who have relationships with humans. That was brilliant! I must say that is what draws me in. I can’t imagine watching just for social issues.
But then, maybe I just don’t understand what he is saying?
I guess that’s one of the differences between the nerdy fans and the non-nerdy fans. I’m not watching for the romantic story, I’m watching for the supernatural creatures. It was the same when Lost was on – a lot of people were watching it for the love triangle aspect, but others were watching it for the time travelling.
But I think that True Blood has turned a lot of non-geeky people on to a type of fandom that they probably wouldn’t have become involved with otherwise… Attending conventions, endlessly disecting every episode in minute detail and discussing it online, cosplay, fan fiction, fan art, fan-made videos, fansites and podcasts, obsessively following the careers and personal lives of the actors involved… there is something about True Blood that inspires a great deal of creativity and devotion in its fanbase.
I don’t think True Blood was written for nerds. I know a lot of people that love the show, and all of them are different and not a certain “type”. I do admit I’m a True Blood nerd however, this show has ruined me for anything else. The show appeals to all of the major categories: drama, comedy, action, horror. (My favorite being the comedy aspect of it.)
OMG yes Jody, you are right… the comedy of it. The total tongue in cheek campiness of it! I love it! Gosh! Maybe I am a nerd..:)
If you mean this show is for smart people who enjoy a fantasy spin on everyday issues with a touch of sex and gore, then yes, I guess True Blood is for nerds. Otherwise, this show seems to have a wide audience appeal. It totally ruined me for all other shows that I used to love.
I fly my “nerd” flag high. I enjoy shows that actually make me think and I find that TB has so many layers to it, as do many shows within the Scifi genre. As to the comment about Russell being “on the show, without acting”, I think that since he’s been encased for over a year in concrete, he could be rehabilitating somewhere so, they would only need to CGI him in a “hospice for vamps” so he can regain his strength.
I agree regarding Russell, he’s in a vampire rehabilitation centre for sure – maybe he has minions taking care of him? He could have his own vampire terrorist cell. Though I’d like to see an animatronic Russell instead of a CGI one – I much prefer the old-school special effects, and True Blood doesn’t always have the best CGI!
i dont think true blood is classified for nerds or geeks you just have to be open minded and believe and be interested in this type of show
