It just goes to show that there is honor among fangs… HBO aired the first Season 3 promo last Thursday on the CW, and the stars of the successful show, The Vampire Diaries, are fans of True Blood.
Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore on the show, nut-shelled the differences between the various vampire hits to Rolling Stone: ”There’s no competition… [Twilight] is the reason we all have jobs.”
He continued: “You have the feature, gigantic, box office success version [Twilight], then you have the cable success version [True Blood], and then you have the primetime network success version [The Vampire Diaries]. You have all three of those that creates this vampirical world. There are obviously comparisons, but they’re apples and oranges.”
In the interview, Somerhalder confessed, ”I couldn’t watch it for a while because I really wanted to do True Blood, and I blew my audition. I realized I really wanted this job and any time you realize you want something, then you’re done.”
Nina Dobrev, who plays the human heroine Elana Gilbert on The Vampire Dairies, has different feelings for Alan Ball’s vampires: “Well, I wouldn’t mind if vampire Eric came on [the show] to bite Elena.”
Get in line, Nina. There are a lot of women (and plenty of men, too) who feel that way.
There are similarities between the shows, including a love-triangle, Civil War Era flashbacks, a beautiful and dangerous female Maker, and a setting that’s a kind of crossroads for supernatural delights. But as much as I enjoy The Vampire Diaries (it’s admittedly well-done), I don’t see a cross-over between the two shows happening anytime soon, even if Damon did acknowledge (and mock) Twilight vampires in a recent episode (just a little something he and Stephen Moyer have in common). It’s probably just as well, as television screens everywhere would be spontaneously combusting from the combined heat. We’ve all seen what happens to a vampire on fire…
Still, it’s nice to know we’re not the only ones who love us some Blood. Now I’m curious if the True Blood cast feels similarly towards their network brothers-in-blood.

Latbfan,
It’s wonderful to pop into my favorite TB fansite and read your articles! I love Vampire Diaries. Damon, what a pity he didn’t get cast on TB. His eyes are mezmerizing. Elana is a silly, silly girl to be with Stefan. There was also a commercial for the S2 DVD on the season finale of Supernatural. It was very funny.
I wonder if he auditioned for Bill.
No, it was for Jason.
I’m sure Ian would have made a good Jason but I can’t picture anyone but Ryan in that role. I like Vampire Diaries, but it’s no Bill…..I mean True Blood. : )
I agree, aem. It is no Bill!
I LOVE Vampire Diaries. Love Ian – have since he was BOONE. Damon has my heart, especially after the finale.
I started as a Twilight fan, and became quickly hooked by Charlaine Harris and Sookie. I avoided Vampire Diaries as I felt like I was “betraying” True Blood. However, after seeing Damon and those eyes and that bad boy facade, I was hooked. My daughter asks me all the time which “series” is my favorite…I just can’t decide. They really are very different. I love all my vampires!
