Who likes True Blood? Why does it appeal to so many? The folks over at DarkWaveDoom have a few ideas.
Who knew that regal southern gentlemen vampires and demure human ladies could make for the greatest show to hit HBO in quite some time? Getting geared up for a third season, fans are buzzing about what could possibly happen this time around. So far, the series has managed to make household names (and major crushes) out of random Swedish actors, revived Alan Ball’s relevance, and provided spin-off potential for everything from soda to new versions of the books that the series is based on in the first place.
There are a number of reasons that “True Blood” is one of the best things to hit satellite tv in quite some time. First, it manages to appeal to people looking for very different things in an HBO series. Those who want the fantastic and the slightly gloomy will be really into the vampire back story as well as the crumbling Gothic southern homes being filmed expertly by Alan Ball. Fans of camp and kitsch will love the show’s funnier moments, with a fast-talking and truly sassy gay drug dealer stealing every scene he’s in, and markedly hilarious exchanges between midlevel vampires and higher-up sheriffs. “True Blood” is also one of those shows where those who need to swoon at romance can do so right next to partners who are more interested in gory fights or more racy scenes of romance.

Their right! It was the romance that brought me in and has kept me there, but I love a lot of the weird stuff too.
I grew up in a small, Southern town so some of the TB characters were my neighbors. I love the romance, the blood sucking, the violence, and the small-town Southern charm. The weird stuff makes it feel kinda like home. ;-)
It was the vampires that brought me in. I’ve loved Vampires ever since I was a young teen and read Dracula for the first time. So, that cemented my interest first. Then, the story and the romance and it being set in a southern place keeps me interested. There are so many vampire shows/movies out now that really portray vampires in a hideously funny way or way too sexy to where it’s funny way. This show hits the nail on the head by being funny, serious, romantic, sexy, everything in just the right way in the right amount. As long as the show is on the air, I will watch and continue to get friends who don’t know about it, into it.
Plus, if you haven’t read the books that the show is based on, I suggest you do. After the first season, I ran out and bought the box set. c:
Yep, me too Lee. I, for some reason, always was drawn to the vampires (we could get into this, but too long this early). And weirdly enough, probably because I don’t watch TV I had no clue about True Blood until someone sat me down and said, “Hey, you need to watch this.” I did and it has never been the same since.
I must be honest that although it was Bill’s character that initially made things, um… interesting, it’s the other characters that add so much to the series. Bellefleurs? LOVE THEM. Now I’m the one sitting people down to watch the show.
Also bought the box set, but that’s all I’m gonna say about that ;)
The Southern Gothic nature of the show is the main appeal to me, after Bill, but it’s also part of Bill. That made me think about Eric, there’s nothing southern about Eric at all. Nothing romantic. He doesn’t fit with the town or the other characters. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’ve never warmed up to him. Okay, there’s lots of reasons, but that might be a part of it that I’ve never considered before.
It’s weird that Eric is there really. He’s super powerful oldstuff vampire. Why’s he in LA? I can’t remember if the books ever covered that.
Yes, it was the romance of season one and Bill Compton that brought me in to True Blood. I did have an interest in Vampires and Science Fiction, but one I set eyes on that gorgeous hunk of a man and saw waht he was going through to become more ‘human’, I was sucked in!! I did try to read the books, but could not get in to them, especially when things went haywire with Bill and Sookie. Did not warm up to Eric – book or TV, so don’t understand his ‘charm’.
I love True Blood and I love the characters that AB is portraying on the show! Go True Blood!!
I got into this series because of the vampires. I have loved vampires since I was 6 years old, and I will watch/read anything (as long as it’s good/entertaining and interests me) with them in it. I love the action, suspense, characterization, and humor; the sex scenes are nice, too. ;)
I was drawn by the opening credits… no less!
I didn’t wanna watch the show, I wasn’t sure I was gonna like it, but when I saw the opening credits my jaw dropped and my eyes went out of their sockets… and I knew I had to watch it!!!
It was genius… it is genius!!!
Ok, i think i will save this for thenext time I’ll have to argue with Frank (friend of mine) about it! I wasn’t wrong :D
