Team Bill ALERT! The Viking Hordes Have Overtaken Our Lead
By NotHoney on Sep 3 2010 | 9 Comments »We can’t say it enough: Thanks to everyone who’s donated to the Battle of the Fang!
It’s hard to escape BP’s propaganda machine claiming they’ve cleaned up the estimated four million gallons of oil they dumped into the Gulf. While I’m here in Florida, visiting family in my home town on the Gulf Coast, the ads are inescapable. They run on just about every network station I’ve seen and they run often. The oil is gone, we’re here for the long haul, no worries, go back to buying our gas and not worrying about the devastation of the Gulf of Mexico.
The Guardian UK reports that BP has spent $1 million per week on advertising in the 18 weeks since the explosion and spill. That’s a lot of money to convince you and me that all that oil isn’t a problem and that it disappeared as soon as the gushing well was capped. It’s also an enormous pile of horse shit.
“Media Monitor’s trends report for the first four weeks of August shows BP spent $2.7 million in the main US advertising markets. In one week alone, from August 10-16, it spent $947,041 buying up slots in the top 87 radio markets and 50 television areas and selected cable channels.’
The report also shows that spending was focused on key areas damaged by the spill, with five cities in Florida – including Miami and Fort Myers – in the top 10 areas in which BP bought the most airtime in the week from August 10-16.”
Congress requires BP to reveal how much they’ve spent on advertising and when President Obama got wind of the campaign he warned BP: “”What I don’t want to hear is, when they’re spending that kind of money on their shareholders and on TV advertising, that they’re nickel-and-diming fishermen or small businesses here in the Gulf who are having a hard time.”
Now comes news of another oil rig explosion in the Gulf! You’ve probably heard that a platform owned by Mariner Energy Inc. exploded about 80 miles from Vermilion Bay, Louisiana. All 13 rig workers are accounted for, but there are reports of a mile-long oil slick coming from the platform. The Washington Post reports: “The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire, according to a homeland security operational update obtained by The Associated Press.’
The update said the platform was producing about 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil. ”
So while I’m down home this week I went to a local beach to smell the wonderful Gulf breezes, and to see how things look. I took some pictures in my iPhone so you can see the beautiful bayous and beaches I grew up on. Even today when I smell salt air and decaying vegetation I’m reminded of my home town and days spent on beaches watching fiddler crabs dig holes and collecting shells and getting really sunburnt. This is what we’re raising money to protect and to restore – beautiful beaches and swamps where wildlife flourish and humans can enjoy the benefits of a healthy ecosystem. This is why we ask you to donate to GulfAid so often, and why Stephen Moyer chose GulfAid for this charity contest.
Please donate to GulfAid. We can’t forget what’s been done to the people and wildlife of the Gulf Coast, and we can’t rely on BP to fix their own mess.
Team Bill! We need your help! Look what happened to our lead! Please donate to GulfAid and help kick some Viking ass! Remember! the charity auctions for the Sock of Destiny signed by Steve and Anna, and Steve’s signed script are also open so get in there and bid like you mean it!
Smoochies!

Thanks for the update. It’s only a $631 difference…..we can do it TEAM BILL!
Thanks! Tell all your friends to donate to Team Bill/GulfAid!
1 million dollars a week in advertising?! that is just plain obscene considering the magnitude of the Gulf Coast catastrophe and its long terms effects on the region’s population and ecosystems… good grief….
Go teams !!!!!!
I read on HuffPo today that the total is even higher than a $1 million per week. It’s an all-out blitz to convince Americans that millions of gallons of oil just disappeared and all is well. BP is just plain evil!
If there’s justice in this world, then this obscene campaign – spot-on, gatto – should backfire mightily, and every ad that appears should be just one more reminder of BP’s dissembling. Nails, coffin, etc. Doesn’t anyone at BP corporate headquarters remember how the Tylenol crisis was managed so brilliantly exactly by NOT being stage-managed?
Back to Battle of the Fang: whichever Team you support, it’s fantastic that the contest is so evenly matched, and so successful. (The amount of press it’s getting has also been phenomenal . Did you expect to get that amazing coverage, BotF Babes?)
We knew the sock would be a hit, but we did not expect the amount of media coverage it is getting and in most cases, we are grateful to all that have helped.
What we did expect, is the negative and mean spirited comments coming from others, and they know who they are.
The true meaning of this is charity, and Steve will be proud of all his fans that have participated in this, as well as Alex.
We can do this Team Bill! How did a fun thing for charity become so mean spirited. BP must think we are idiots. The ramifications of this oil spill will be felt for decades. GO TEAM BILL! We are gonna kick some Viking booty ;)
From yer lips to God’s ears, baby!
Thanks for posting the information. It left me angry! I had donated to the Gulf Coast before I knew about the Battle of the Fang, and I am glad to donate again. Come on Team Bill!
