Hello? come and join us for Moyeuristic time
The fine ass women who bring you this website are a multinational bunch, being a Canuck, a Kiwi, a Spanish señorita and two American gals, so we were happy to add another exotic contributor to our ranks to review another of Stephen’s better films- Uprising. Melissa Bellais from Venezuela wrote us this snappy review of a bloody great film, and we have included some sexy screencaps (with bonus bad ass uniform action, y’all) to go with it.
Mucho thanks to Melissa for being such a sweetie and damn good with words. Enjoy everyone!
I have this condition, it’s not exactly a disease, it’s more of a syndrome, I call it Moyeuristic Disorder and it started in October when I discovered True Blood. It’s not such a bad thing, by far it is the most harmless of personality disorders and the main symptom that you develop is this urgent need to watch every little thing, every little movie, every little show, interview or video that has Stephen Moyer in it for even one fraction of a second.
So in order to ease the symptoms of my illness I’ve been forced to succumb to this need and in the process I’ve found that sometimes you lose two hours of your life watching a very, very young Stephen Moyer hidden under armor, making speeches so dull and corny that it makes your ears bleed, but sometimes you come across a precious gem like “Uprising”.
I saw this movie about 5 years ago, first of all because I’m a history geek and a bit obsessed with the Holocaust and WWII so I obviously love war movies, and second because of the amazing cast, that included David Schwimmer “who was on a break” from Ross, Hank Azaria with yet another accent , Leelee Sobieski, Donald Sutherland, Jon Voight and others.

'the Nazi's won't catch us if we look happy'

Babyfaced Stephen gets to waste Nazis. Awesome!
This movie is as grim and harsh as any other Holocaust movie so I most warn you, if you are too thin-skinned you should refrain from seeing it because you will find images of horrifying cruelty and despair, with people jumping off buildings, babies drowning and endless anguish and distress. But it also is a movie about courage and pride, that raises you in a cloud of infinite hope with great sequences of combat fighting that makes you believe that our heroes can actually win, and it also gives you glimpses of genuine joy and pleasure with some very funny moments… and here’s where our beloved Stephen plays a major role.
When I saw this movie I had no idea of who Stephen Moyer was, so I could appreciate his performance with absolute objectivity; his portrayal of the young and idealistic Kazik was so compelling, thrilling and moving that makes him definitely one of the highlights of the movie… the other good thing is that he’s on screen about 90% of the time and this is a 3 hours movies so there’s a lot of Stephen to see, although with too much clothes on.
It starts in 1939 when the Germans invade Poland and Mordechaj Anielewicz (Hazaria) and Yazik Zuckerman (Schwimmer) are making arrangements to escape to Palestine, while walking down a street in Warsaw they ran into Simcha “Kazik” Rotten (divinely handsome Stephen Moyer) who is the chauffeur of Adam Czerniakow (Sutherland) head of the Jewish Council. Right there they establish the position of each character, Mordechaj and Zuckerman need Kazik help to get in touch with Czerniakow to ask him support for the Resistance Movement, but Kazik is not quite willing to do it since this can cost him his job. After a while, he begins to question Czerniakow’s passivity and the moment he realizes the vileness of the Nazis (I won’t say how), Moyer delivers the best performance I’ve seen him do so far, and in that moment Kazik decides to take a more active role and join the rebels.

Stephen Moyer with the real Kazik
Because of his Aryan looks and his lack of Jewish accent he can pass as a Pole, so Kazik becomes a courier for the movement, sneaking from the ghetto to the Aryan side bringing news, food and weapons; he spends the second half of the movie wearing an SS uniform that makes him look even more sexy, which is disturbing in so many levels since my politically correct inner self forbids me to find a man in a Nazi uniform sexy!!! How does he manage to look hot and yummy and act like a total ladies man when you have an entire army of really pissed Nazi soldiers surrounding the building you’re in because Hitler wants you dead as a birthday present, is beyond my comprehension. But trust me, he does!!! He is a idealistic, brave and heroic young man, funny and sexy and the light and hopeful note in a rather bleak film.

Not very politically correct to say...but OH so hot.
I highly recommend it not only for Stephen obsessed fans such as myself and many others around here, but for anyone who wants to enjoy a film that tells the story of a group of brave men and women who chose to resist in the darkest episode of human history.

Moyeuristic Disorder huh? Add it to the Comptonian Obsession and you hit the nail with my sickness. ;)
Thank you so much for this wonderful review Melissa.
I love Uprising, it’s funny that he is not listed as one of the protagonists but he is. He is there all the time leading the events on the film and takes no small part in the final.
Sorry for the pics gals, they are not the best quality but I haven’t the DVD yet.
Sorry for the pics? Are you crazy woman? LOVE the caps!
Melissa, thank you so much for writing this – I now skip happily off to Amazon where I will purchase and have some Moyeuristic time for myself ;)
then dont forget to buy the movie through our link :P
Thank you so much for allllllll the wonderful pics and the time it took to bring them all to us.
It is so much appreciated!!!!
Thank you Melissa and CE. I watched this movie, compliments to aem who sent me a copy. I had an interest in this film not only because of SM, but because I am half Polish, and though not Jewish, my father and Ukrainian mother were taken by the Germans from their families at a very young age (never to go back home again) and transported to Germany to work on the farms as forced labour. Luckily they were well treated and fell in love and hence my sister was born and subsequently me and then my brother, after they immigrated to Australia.
I have been to Warsaw and have seen the Jewish Quarter in that city and in Krakow. I have also been to the “old town” where I guess this movie was filmed. I have also been to the death camps. It is shocking to think human beings did what they did to other humans. That is why I admire the real people and the actors who portrayed these people in this movie as they gave us a chance to witness history.
Anyhow, back to Stephen. This man had the major role in this movie yet he was not credited as a main! That is a shocker, as he did 100% better job than the others, better than David Schwimmer, who was a main caster!
I loved SM’s character – what a cheeky guy! I was holding my breath for the second half of the movie as I thought he was sure to die, then I remembered he had survived and ran a supermarket chain in Israel!
Thank you for those lovely snaps of our boy! So handsome!
I really recommend this movie, but it does have some horror moments, so beware!
Thank you again for the review!
This movie is very accurate on representing the actual ghetto Uprising and the events leading to it… I remember reading about this when I was in my teens and watching documentaries and every book I could find (I’m not kidding I’m a history geek) and when I saw this movie I though it was very close to what actually happened there, then I heard that the real Kazik was involved in the project… what more accurate can you get, right?
I think the casting was brilliant but there’s a funny thing about it though, Kazik was 19 years old when the ghetto uprising happened… 11 years younger than Steve when he made the movie, also Mordechaj was a lot younger than Azaria, those were kids, in their early twenties and even younger… and they decided not to give in without a fight, they knew they were gonna die but they were determined to take some nazis with them… And Stephen was amazing as Kazik all playfull and boyish, but still so brave and responsible!
P.S.: Doesn’t our boy looks lovely in those pics?!!! Great job on the caps ZZ… and there’s a lot of them!!!
Wow Lizzie, I love your connection to this film. Being there sharing, in the experience, having a tie to it all brings it closer to home.
I thank and bless my Comptonian disorder and my Moyeuristic affliction (and no I do not wish to be cured….ever!) everyday because without it I would never have found this great movie (along with all Stephens work), and I mean GREAT. It was so well done and acted by all.
I so agree with you Lizzie, Stephen was one of the top 3 actors and should have recieved top billing for his portrayal of Kascik. An amazingly wonderful character, made more so by Stephens spot on acting and charming wit. His injection of occasional bits of charm and humor ( and of course being the resident ROMEO)made this film ,about such a difficult tragic subject, bearable. Although my daughter and I had to share a box of kleenex during the whole thing.
Thank you CE for posting and to Melissa for the great writeup.
Also…OMG, I am so in Moyeruistic heaven with all the screencaps!!!!!!!!
We need more Stephen movies!!!!
Moyeuristic Disorder and Comptonian Obsession! Yes! How true!!!!
I love your review Melissa, thanks!! I loved this movie and as Melissa says “it’s a precious gem”, definitely one of my favourite Stephen Moyer movies. It’s hard to watch at times, but it’s a must whether a history buff or not.
I too kept thinking Kazik was going to die since he kept putting himself in direct danger, plus his character was a bright spot in a sometimes painful movie.
ZZ, I just adore your screen caps. Thanks for all the hard work. For some strange reason I love the caps where Steve’s character is holding a gun. Yummy! And the man knows how to wear a cap. Yummy again!
The only reason Steve didn’t get in the top five for billing in this movie is his name wasn’t as well known as the others. IMHO
I find it interesting that Anna also did a movie about the Warsaw Ghetto and getting children out. Out of all the actors in the world both Steve and Anna tackled roles in similar themed movies.
I though the exact same thing!!!
Actually Irena Sendler worked with the Zegota and the underground resistance to get the jewish children out of the ghetto and so did Kazik to help organize the ghetto uprising and then the Varsaw uprising. It’s very possible that Sendelr and Kazik would have meet…
OK wow. That is really crazy coincidence?
Bellissimo articolo…grazie per le notizie meravigliose su Stephen Moyer…Io l’adoro…
I really need to make a list of Stephen Moyer’s movies to buy. I really must build my collection. I believe i have the same disease you all do btw :)
I knew it. You confirmed it. I too have the desease. I have watched a couple of Stephen Moyer films and This is one I haven’t hear of thanks.
Yes, I saw uprising 2 weeks ago. I forced myself to watch it. I really hate watching war movies. The violence and suffering, is too much too bear. I’m a true softie and after having my daughter, the tears are just buckets, at the slightest thing. But I understand when these stories must be told, for us to understand and re-look at humanity and the cruelty that can exit.
Moyeristic is real. His acting in this movie, is trully admirable to watch, along with the rest of the cast. Yes, he should have had top billing. But you know holly dolly wood, a name has to attract the audience to it.
While, I enjoyed his 90% screening, I really enjoyed him in “restraint”. There, he was innocent (so you think), injured, dark and psychotic. The way I like him.
I also have COMD…always gives some reassurance to one’s sanity when one (or several) of us verabalizes. Sometimes I just think I’m falling off the deep end. But it is harmless totally all good. Wonderful review too!
Thanks for the great review, and for the reminder that I should watch this again. Since I came under Stephen’s spell this summer I’ve collected and watched and re-watched as many of his projects as I could get my hands on. This is the only one I watched just the once, it was a heartbreaking story, and I found myself unable to just FF to ‘the good bits’ with Stephen because the sujbect matter desrves respect. I totally agree that Stephen shines in this role.
Oops – thanks also for all the wonderful screencaps – so many, it must have taken some time.

this is also a favorite of mine. Stephen was reallllly quite good in this. It was a good and meaty role but again, no awards for our guy. Director won, LeeLee won, Azaria won…nothing for Steve. (i’m not bitter though). I think he should have been higher in the credits. (i’m not bitter though).
Thanks so much for the review. I, too, have this COMD, and bought the cd of Uprising early last year, but it looked like Stephen had just a small role in it, so stopped watching after the first 15-20 min. (the grim subject matter didn’t help, either.) I’m so glad you posted this, cause I watched the rest of the film. Our man gave an amazing performance.
Thank you for a great article, and a great review of this movie. I just ordered “The Grand” and “Lilies” from Amazon, and now I will order this movie. I am afflicted with the same disorder, and I scan the web sites for any pics, articles, or videos of fabulous SM. You did a wonderful job with the pictures as well as the description of the film. I remember reading a critic’s review somewhere who said that SM was the strongest peformance in the movie. I am looking forward to seeing it. Thanks again, and here’s to seeing the new films that this marvelous man will be in !
Girls, I just added a little “gem” right before the gallery. Stephen in Paris Premiere of Uprising. Enjoy!!!
It’s 08:30 in the morning here in Venezuela and I said ok, I’m gonna drink my coffee have my cigarrette and watch a little SM before I start to work and what do I see? Our dear ZZ uploaded a new wonderful pic of our lovely boy… girl were do you get those pics?!!! I love them all!!!!
Thank You, we have good friends that provide awesome reviews and beautiful pics ;)
I’ve had a copy of Uprising since Aem sent it to me sometime last year, but only watched it today, why I do not know, probably because it’s a sensitive subject with me–my mother was from Poland, and I often thank the Lord that she came to Canada as a child with her family after WWI, otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here, I’m sure. The movie was pretty good, but Steve definitely was superb, and was a real scene stealer. I want to read Kazik’s memoirs about fighting in the Warsaw Ghetto. I love the photos you posted, our man definitely looks great in any uniform.
Happy 41st birthday, Steve. I hope you get the acting recognition you so deserve, like an Emmy next fall, for starters. You deserved an award for Uprising, that is certain.
I haven’t seen this yet. look forward to it though……
