Ryan Kwanten and Rutina Wesley at 2010 Breakthrough Awards

Ryan Kwanten and Rutina Wesley attended last night’s annual Breakthrough Awards ceremony at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills. Australians in Film organized the event and honored Ryan with a Breakthrough Award.
Ryan shared that his father had Skyped some tips about his acceptance speech: “Dad, who likes to think he is a pretty good public speaker, said: ‘Ryan, you have to tell them how proud you are to be an Australian, and you have to use the term no worries.’”
“And he said ‘Talk about sausage sizzles. Let them know in Australia we turn everything into sausage sizzles.’”
This American has no idea if he’s referring to actual sausage, like the meat product, or if it’s some kind of inside (and possibly perverted) Australian joke. Either way, it sounds like Ryan’s dad would fit right into Bon Temps, especially since he wanted Ryan to include, “’Tell them how good your old man looks in a pair of Sluggos.’” (Apparently, that means Speedos.) Like father, like son.
Congratulations, Ryan

I actually saw something on tele tonight with Ryan and other Aussies, saying how they have broken through in Hollywood.
A sausage sizzle is just that. A barbie (BBQ) with sausages sizzling. You put the sausage (or banger) after they are cooked, onto a piece of bread and smother it with cooked onions and tomato sauce – yum! Sausage sizzles are very popular for fund raising events or when large businesses are having a sale or when you come over for a barbie, where you can also have other type of meat etc. Very Aussie!
Lizzie, thanks for the explanation. Turns out I’m been making sausage sizzle for years now! Also, congrats to Ryan, one of the finest actors in a show filled with fineass actors.
Well said, Liv. Look at him there – he doesn’t look like that Stackhouse boy at all. Amazing what he does with just his facial expressions to become Jason.

Thanks, lizzie, for the translations! I think Australians are long-lost cousins of Louisianians. Not with the tomato sauce – that just sounds weird. But all the other parts. Nothing people like more than to throw meat (preferably that they’ve killed themselves) onto the fire and toss back some cold beers. But I’m sticking to my theory that it sounds pervy… :-)
Hello! Long time lurker (and Aussie) here ;)
Actually in your typical Aussie sausage sizzle you get donated buns or bread that are three days old and pre boiled split sausages. Totally disgusting stuff really, but no Australian can ever walk past one! Half of our economy is supported by sausage sizzles ;)
Welcome AF! But wait, really? Y’all boil sausages and put them on old bread? OK, I was totally not ever making this ;)
Thankyou! I really enjoy reading all the ‘discussions’ on here and you always have the latest news. And yes, we really do eat boiled barbecued sausages on stale bread. And we pay a few dollars for the pleasure as well!
We do that disgusting sausage sizzle thing here in New Zealand as well. As a veggie, I do not partake. I wish they’d have cheese roll stalls everywhere instead. Welcome!
You know, in LA, I’ve never met a vegetarian or a vegan, although I do know several proud carnivores. Honest to goodness, I know grown people who don’t/won’t consume produce. At all. The closest they’ll come is corn bread (although I keep explaining that it’s not a vegetable).
Welcome, AF. Glad to have you.
I went for a holiday to NZ once and didn’t come back for four years. Love the place!
