Sookie and Rene Dancing at the Engagement Party - Right Before Rene Tries to Off Her

Bon Temps knew him as Rene Lenier, Arlene’s 4th (or 5th) attempt at marital bliss and the road crew worker with the cute Cajun butt, but the skeletons in his closet turned out to be actual skeletons of the people he’d killed. He seemed nice at first: defending Sookie, loyal to Arlene and her children, and good friend to Jason and Hoyt. But all that turned out to be a lie because he actually was Drew Marshall, who’d skipped out of town after murdering his vampire-loving sister and was hiding beneath a fake Cajun accent. He was clever enough to kill only women connected to Jason, and in the end, the fact that he was the serial killer seemed to come out of nowhere. His cover-story unraveled quickly between Sam sniffing him out and Colby and Lisa finding his naughty box of evidence (he apparently didn’t watch Law and Order or CSI). Sookie shoveled him to death before anyone could ask him why he suddenly started killing off women associated with vampires (after living peacefully for a couple of years, as far as we know), and though I can’t say that I blame her for the expediency (it was a do-or-die kind of moment), I wish he’d have been thinking about it because the timing has always puzzled me. But what’s done is done, and a shovel to the neck is not something that can be taken back. Even with all the supernatural big-bads Bon Temps has seen, an important lesson learned is to never underestimate the destructive power a sociopathic human being. Rest in… Well, actually, maybe Rene Lenier/Drew Marshall can just rest.

I knew it was him even before I read the book and saw who it was in the episode where he gets killed. I didn’t like that character. He was a busy buddy and he was too obvious so I figured it out.I am like that

“……and a shovel to the neck is something that can’t be taken back.” heh, good one.

Good bye Rene! Your character made me wish I hadn’t plowed ahead in the book to discover the ending. However, it appears your progeny lives on, making you dead but not forgotten.

NOW I Know that You Are Kidding!! Rene Lenier?? Is This some kind of Sick Joke??
He murdered 4 Women and tried to kill Sookie!! He probably would have killed Jason Too!
And Maybe Arlene AND her kids?? Way to Go for feeling sorry for a Serial Killer!! :(

    • Fooledbylove says:

Pssst….does the phrase tongue in cheek humor mean anything to you?

    • gattopardo says:

but where exactly are you reading “sorry” or pity into these words of final farewell?
what I believe latbfan was saying – and I agree – is that it would hgave been good to know exactly what triggered René’s killing spree and what was behind his choice of victim. It’s not about pitying the killer, it’s about understanding his psychology – an absolute imperative if you want to draw a an insightful profile to use as reference in identifying and stopping serial killers.
I think latbfan’s last words say it all.

antonio, I’m digging up (ha!) the memories and doing one for everyone, every single person, who’s died on the show. Some of the deaths are more memorable than others, and some of these are going to be more serious. But yes. Everyone’s getting eulogized, so stay tuned!

Apparently some people don’t understand what this RIP section is about.

LATBFan – when Rene was trying to kill Sookie in Merlotte’s, she saw into his head and saw his sister and her uniform and her name tag and that he killed her. Sookie’s ability allows her to glimpse feelings from people and not just words or images. It’s like watching a silent movie, you still get an idea of the “feeling” of the scene even if you can’t hear it… and that’s what Rene’s head was like. Images and some words – without the Cajun accent. LOL

So with all that, Sookie did some research into the uniform Cindy(Rene’s sister) was wearing, found out she’d worked at that one diner.. remember she and Sam went to that little town and asked around. They hadn’t put it together that Rene was Drew Marshall bec the fax of his picture was missed… but after a while, Sookie figured it out.

The story is that Drew found out his sister Cindy was messing around with vamps. He had such a feeling of disgust that his sister would let a dead man inside her that he lost his temper, she fought back, he strangled her with her own apron… and then he screwed her too. Yep, sicko. So any girl who liked vamps was a target for him. It was only coincidence that those women had some link to Jason but that’s bec he’s such a ladies man. Rene loved Arlene bec she was not a fang banger and didn’t like them. Bec of that, he felt Arlene was the right girl for him. He wasn’t going to touch those kids or Arlene.

RIP Rene. May you find some kind of peace… although apparently, he’ll be back in Season 5. Maybe. Or maybe it was a one time thing bec of Halloween?

Rene was awful cute for a crazy serial killer.

  5. Kells says:

    AND…poor Arlene-she’s pregnant with the psycho’s baby!!!!

  6. TerreEssa says:

Interesting timing on your post, latbfan … let’s see what happens with Arlene next week!

    • latbfan says:

Terre, I caught a glimpse of him on the preview, too, so we’ll see if it’s happy coincidence or indeed interesting timing. :-)

I love how y’all totally hate this guy for what he did, but still looooooove Bill after what he did to Lorena.
We know y’all want Arlene and Terry to be all lovey dovey and kissin’ in a tree and all that gooey stuff. No thanks. Wish Rene turned out to be a good guy and they made Terry the killer. Actually liked the actor who played Rene better.

    • ZZ says:

Liv, have you heard this ;) ????

      • Lividity says:

Oh my. That’s harsh. I guess I don’t “totally hate this guy.” He played a major role in season one and quite frankly, I do really miss the actor. I thought he portrayed Rene/Drew spot-on. Also, I did love his lil’ Cajun butt. ;)

You can wish for things all you want, but that’s sort of futile at this point. As my favorite characters are Andy & Terry, I have to respectfully disagree with you. The show, IMO wouldn’t be the same without the Bellefleurs, and I’m not ashamed to admit that.

As for Bill and what he did to Lorena? Guessing you’re referring to the consensual sex that occurred? The event that Lorena says was the best f*ck she’s had in awhile? We might not like to engage in sex like that, but Lorena sure didn’t have a problem with it. So I guess I don’t quite understand your rage, but I get the feeling that you have favorite characters and loath the ones that aren’t your favorite? Too bad. All of the characters on the show add so much to the plot, they each have redeeming traits and not-so redeeming traits.

I wonder how you know what we *all* want?

  8. MLionheart says:

I’m with Liv on this… And I luv all the characters. Some more than others, but even the bad ones have roles to play in the whole big scheme of things. And yes, we love Bill bec we see his struggle, his anguish, his plight and we can all relate a little.

And I – in no way – condone the violence Bill dealt Lorena and the wickedness of their screwed up relationship… it was very odd to me that a child would feel such immense loathing for his maker… but understandably, Lorena kind’a put herself there. If I had a maker that tortured me, I would hate her too. I guess she didn’t know how to be a good maker.. like Godric.

  9. MLionheart says:

one more thing… the Bellefleurs.. I don’t think Rene the actor could pull off a crazy ass look like Terry’s LOL He is just like his description in the books. I’m hoping Season 5 brings back some of Rene Lenier… he’s got a vested interest in Arlene’s well being specially since she had his only son.

  10. Anonymous says:

Mmmm, Rene. I’m sorry but I thought he was very sexy. Yes, he was a psycho but the actor who played him. Damn, just something so hot about him.

And my theory on why he started killing: He said Sookie reminded him of his baby sister. From what we know about Cindy, there were quite a few similarities: a waitress, involved with vamps, kind of feisty and independent. So, maybe seeing Sookie with Bill was just a trigger.
