Maryann, not so virginal bride for the god who didn't come
Maryann’s short-lived residence in Bon Temps started out well enough. She seemed too good to be true, the way she rescued Tara and told Andy Bellefleur where to park his crappy car (and wove her magic to compel him to dance like an epileptic) and ripped Lettie Mae a new one (and admit it, we’ve all wanted to do that; I wish I were writing her eulogy). At first, her parties were sexy and her mountains of fresh fruit intriguing, but then she out-stayed her welcome. The black-eyed zombies became tiresome, entrails need to stay on the inside of bodies and fingers attached to hands, and I’m not sure I’ll ever recover from the giant egg (that turned out to just be an egg) or the tree made of meat. The life lesson she imparted was to never trust people with infinite supplies of fresh Egyptian cotton towels and really good weed.
When Sam ripped her black, immortal heart from her chest, it was as if a cancer had been removed from the show, and I was grateful her insanity was at an end. But in that moment, her long, long life wasted waiting for a god who never came, seemed so ultimately pathetic, a jilted bride who simply couldn’t accept that she’d been dumped at the alter. Like all the big-bads, in the end, she was disappointingly weak. But ding-dong, the witch is dead, and we can move on to other supernatural lunatics. Rest in peace, Maryann the Maenad.

Ding Dong the Witch is dead – love it!
RIP Maryanne!
Oh! I could kill for her clothes!
Ah Maryann, wish I could say we miss you. You did bring us methileptic dancing, so for that we’ll always be grateful.
I wonder who inherited all those Egyptian cotton towels?
I made a “best of” DVD of my favorite lines/scenes of Season 2 recently. After watching the Maryann scenes again, I can finally appreciate her and her character. I thought she was stunning to look at (I think she would have made a great Claudine) and I admired the clothes she wore and her little movements. Although I certainly got sick of her and was glad to see her go, she did have a lot of great scenes. I think Michelle Forbes did an excellent job.
“Why be embarrassed by pleasure and laughter?”
The best character! I love her :) AB shouldn’t have killed her… Maryann/Callisto ROCKS!
I miss Maryann so much. She was fierce. LOVE HER.
I’m sorry, I found her and the whole storyline a bit more than tedious. There were highlights but not really enough for me. I was glad when Sam managed to end it.
Just my personal opinion, everyone else’s will probably differ. :D
Never liked her character….
I liked her character. And that’s what the Furies did – rip people apart – it’s their nature. No one who worships Dionysus was free from mental insanity. It was par for the course. The “tree” made of meat – that’s an old ritual going back to the days of the Druids and possibly before then… the only thing is, usually it was a huge shaped figure (shaped human) made of wicker/wood. They would fill it with humans and burn it for sacrifice. You guys can look this up.
Luv’d MaryAnn, but yeah, I wanted to see other things… she took over the town and everyone acting dumb like that was getting on my nerves. In the books, she was not killed as she’s thought and regarded more as a relic. She travelled from place to place and sometimes would cause madness in people just for fun.
And she expected a sacrifice and the vamps all acquiesced to her wishes. — in the books that is. — and they were always glad when she went on her merry.
