Rest in Peace, Godric

Godric2 rest in peace

Godric

“Could you be a companion of death?”

Godric appeared before a dying human Eric and asked him that question, promising him what he loved most, life, if he could be death’s companion. Eric saw what we all saw at first: a little boy with an angelic face and blood on his lips. Already a thousand years old when he became Eric’s Maker, he taught Eric “there is no right or wrong, only survival or death.” But after millennia of bloodshed, Godric came to disdain his own existence.

Underneath Godric’s sweet exterior was a wealth of understanding, patience, and a restrained power that thus far has been unequaled in the vampire world. Some, like Lorena, found him sanctimonious, but his eyes told his story of two thousand years walking the earth, of a weariness dark enough to prompt his own demise.

Old enough and powerful enough to rule anywhere, Godric was content to stay in his corner of Texas, ruling his Nest by calm example. We do not know the many adventures he and Eric shared, but we do know that Godric assisted Eric in his quest to avenge his family. I imagine they spent centuries together, more time in each other’s company than anyone else’s, their love for each other as devoted as any bond we’ve seen. Eric’s loyalty to his beloved Maker allowed Sookie (and the audience) to see a softer, more vulnerable side of the usually fierce Sheriff.

Ultimately misguided in his efforts to placate the Fellowship of the Sun by sacrificing himself, Godric’s intention was to atone for his long life of spilling blood.

Godric rest in peace

Godric and a Human Eric

His death was among the most poignant scenes of the series, and Eric was not the only one reduced to tears on that rooftop in Dallas. Godric faced the dawn with open arms, welcoming his final release from the life he could no longer bear to live. Like Sookie, I believe Godric found God and forgiveness.

Rest in peace, Godric.

“There are centuries of faith and love between us… Far. Bror. Son. Let me go.”

‘I will rise up’ episode is by far my favourite of the series thus far. Godric/Eric my fav relationship. Love what the show did with the eric/godric/FOTS storyline. Everything about it was great!
Glad I get to see Godric again this season! Congrats to Allan Hyde on his great work last season!

Well done, Lat. You actually did a better job of feeling out Godric than the writers did. Unlike you they had a few inconsistencies with his character.

Nice job latbfan! You make me choke up by replaying that final scene. I really wish the writers would let us know if Godric’s choice of death changed Eric’s perspective on the world, so far we haven’t seen it, but he season isn’t over yet. It would be a wasted opportunity, imo, if they didn’t explore this some more.

thank you and well done latbfan.
I loved Godric and his restrained power as you so well termed it. I do wish we’ll get to see a little of him in flashbacks to come.

Beautiful job as ever and always, latbfan. I’m with Aemac on this one: your eulogy limned Godric better than the writers did on occasion. I enjoyed Godric so much that when there were disappointments, they seemed glaring to me.

Maybe I am the only one who thought the roof scene more bathos than pathos (except the exchange between Eric and Godric). With Sookie on that roof, if I were a vampire the sunrise couldn’t come soon enough ;-) I don’t wish to offend any of you in any faith tradition, but the vampires and a Judeo-Christian forgiving God seem non sequitur.

Acanthus, I LOATHED Sookie in that scene. After Eric and Godric’s exchange, which was just beautiful, she had to go and open her mouth. Oy! *rolls eyes* I don’t know why the writers write her like that. AP has chops, but she can only do so much with what they’ve given her.

And yes, there were inconsistencies with Godric’s character. It’s another moment (one of many) when I happily projected my desires onto what was onscreen. And I really think AH did a great job – when he’s not Godric, he’s positively adorable.

    Yep, he’s my team!

Thanks for writing such a lovely little piece for Godric. I’m so looking forward to the final scenes of this series as we know he’s going to be there. I agree with someone earlier who thought that maybe Godric is Eric’s ‘conscience’. I hope so; Eric could do worse than have this lovely creature looking out for him.

AH gave a great performance! I miss the Gordic character!! 2 episodes was Hardly enough!!
Nan Flanagan was Much too mean to him and to Sookie!! Godric much like Gran was a wonderful part of the show! Thanks Again!

I fell in love with Godric immediately. Every other old vampire, in not just True Blood but pretty much every series, film or whatever eventually comes to believe that they’re the ultimate evolution and risen to the upper summit of the food chain (or beyond). But not Godric. He not only had humility and self-awareness not present among the squabbling petty younger ones, but a controlled ferocious power that never needed to be fully exercised or demonstrated, because of his taciturnity. His death scene was so touching and beautiful, and although I was disappointed that the character was gone, it was done so right. As Joss says, give the audience what they need, not what they want.

  9. Rose says:

I thought Gordrick was very sweet immediately!
He really cares about vampires and humans.
I hoped that Godrick would survive, but in the end het didn’t.
It was very sad how he died but he did it because he was guilty for a deed that was actually good!
    It’s really sad he’s dead now… :S
    R.I.P sweet Godrick…

This is so beautiful. Who ever wrote this, you really got the description of Godric right. Very beautiful! I’m in tears.

  12. MLionheart says:

So very awesome! She captured it all and so eloquently.

I always did get a little shiver when watching Godric. Admiration & awe. Specially when he was among other vamps bec he was so small compared to them, like a boy in his teens… and yet you could feel his presence and his power. And all these big bad vamps were scared of him, respected him.. It was very cool to see that done well on the screen bec it’s difficult to pull off.

  13. Danielle:) says:

i absolutely adore him.and i dont know bout anyone else but i found the scene on the roof amazing .i never thought we would see eric that torn up:(

It was one of the best scenes in the show’s history. I still get chills thinking about it and it’s difficult for me not to cry whenever I watch it. Godric really embodied the themes of season two: the battles of prejudice between humans and vampires as well as the need for vampires to evolve and use their power wisely.

Such an amazing character. His time on the show was brief but perfect.
