Even before Bill’s fateful meeting with Lorena, he had been surrounded by death. He served with the 28th Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War and helplessly watched as his friend, Tolliver Humphries, was shot down by Union fire while attempting to save a wounded Bellefleur boy. Although he did not survive, nor did the tale of his heroic rescue attempt, Tolliver Humphries descendants remain in Bon Temps, and he is not forgotten. Rest in peace, brave Tolliver.
A few years after the War (and after Bill’s turning), his son, Thomas Compton, died of smallpox. (And I’m still attempting to work out how there were direct Compton heirs when his only son perished before having a son of his own to carry on the Compton name.) The family, like so many families in the south after the war, was poor and destitute, and Caroline had given up hope that Bill would return to her. But Bill, obviously keeping track of his human family, returned home to bury him. When Bill wept blood tears and Caroline discovered he was no longer human, she tried to kill him. It was Lorena who prevented Bill from hurting Caroline further, and although she asked him to end her life, he glamoured her into forgetting him. While we don’t know the details, at some point, both Caroline and Sarah also died and were buried in the Bon Temps cemetery, along with all of Bill’s other descendants, the last of whom, old Jesse Compton, died without an heir, which allowed Bill to move back into his ancestral home. May they all rest in peace.

Well done, Lat. There very well could have been more Compton’s if Bill had a brother or uncle on his fathers side.
*smile*
Thank you Lat. Bill certainly has had a sad life.
Since it has’nt been mentioned about Bill’s older brother (who died in the books as a boy) , its possible that its a relations descendent…cuz the only other possiblity is that Bill’s daughter had a child out of wedlock. I know I know ….SHOCKING ! isn’t it? If she gave birth to a boy , who later grew up ,married, had kids etc then that would explain the seeming discrepancy…and in the books the Bellefleurs turned out to be descended from her ….so….what if she had more kids later??? Like if she married and had more kids?? OR Bill’s sister is the Bellefleurs ancestor?
Anything is possible….we modern folk like ot think we invented this whole integrated , combined family thing…but its been around a while…just kept hidden.
AB could take this a number of different directions depending on what he’s trying to do with the overall plotline and Bill’s personal journey.
I`m thinking that his daughter could have married a cousin who also used the name Compton…
Hdgcat and Brunopia, I like both your ideas.
I hope this isn’t just another of the inconsistencies in writing (like the “you gave her your blood on the night you met her” crap)…..since they made a point out of mentioning Jesse Compton as the last surviving Compton. I was hoping to see a Bill lookalike descendant…played by SM of course. If anyone could give Bill a run for his money, it would be a human double of him!!! Poor confused, “every man is mine” Sookie wouldn’t know what hit her. He could even be named William….to further confuse everyone. I would love it!!
I have also pondered the “Jesse Compton died” but Bill’s only son, Thomas, died at the age of 6 (which would make Sarah the oldest child!). I put it down to Caroline eventually marrying a Compton cousin or maybe half/step-brother of Bill’s, keeping the property in the Compton line until ‘old Jesse Compton’ died. Being a fan ficcer (though I haven’t actually written any True Blood fics), I had this whole lurid backstory in my brain of Caroline being forced to marry a greedy Compton relative who wanted Bill’s property (that is a VERY nice house for the time period and area they lived in), Sarah never came home (I’m figuring Sarah and/or Bill’s original family came from/still lived in Tennessee, otherwise why send her?), Caroline forced to marry, blah blah blah.
I’m thinking that if anyone got screwed on the whole Lorena Can’t Keep Her Hands Off the Honorable Guys, it’s Caroline.
Loved these scenes, the flashback and everything at the Descendents of the Glorious Dead. Some of my favorites of the series. RIP
I don’t see any explanations for the Compton line in the books, but I don’t think Bill was thee only Compton around.
Charlaine only talked about the Compton daughters marrying into the Bellefleur family.
Sorry you. Family. Care. Helped you
