Mariana Klaveno on True Blood S3: Sookie and Bill fans are going to have some rough road up ahead
By Lividity on Feb 10 2010 | 19 Comments »The delightful Mariana Klaveno, who we interviewed back in early November, recently did an interview where she spoke a lot about what drives her character, Lorena, to be such a passionate vampire.
In the interview she hints at some season three plot developments. For that reason I warn those that do not want any spoilers to read no further (they are minor spoilers BTW).
I’ve put together some of the most revealing excerpts below:
Tragic Lorena:
“The way that I look at it is that she kind of operates from a different set of rules and, in her world, she wants what she wants and humanity is something that’s not a part of her any more and she does what she needs to get that unrequited love, which kind of makes her a tragic character, which I love. What she wants will never want her back and the reason that he doesn’t want her is what she loves in him and it’s this horrible cycle.”
Not so evil?
“I think in this season … she may surprise you a bit. You’ll see, or you think you may, you think that she’ll do something horribly evil, and she chooses not to, which I really love, and I think it’ll maybe surprise people. Not as monstrous as maybe once perceived.”
On following the books & Tara:
“[Laughs] In some ways, with some characters, they are loosely following the books, and in some ways not at all. Um, obviously, the character of Jessica doesn’t exist in the book. Tara’s character is much, much different…” They sort of created a storyline for her this season that involves a character that is in the book but it’s just in a different way, which, I think people are going to love.
Back with Bill?
As for me, I don’t think I’m allowed to say other than… I’m, of course, back with Bill, where I want to be, in that we have scenes together.”
Does this mean more flashbacks?
“When I first got the part, which was just the one episode season one, you know, they sort of said it’ll probably be a strong recurring role, but I had no idea how much they were going to get into it in season two. All of the flashbacks and the history is so much fun, and I think it’s great, not only for me. Selfishly, I want to do all of the fun things, but I think it’s great for Bill’s character because you get to see a lot more of who he is and how he’s made and what makes him the vampire he is today.”
On Sookie & Bill shippers
“I think they’re… yes, yes, the hardcore Sookie and Bill fans are going to have some rough road up ahead. Bill has an interesting arc this season, yeah, that’s all I’ll say, but you’ll see different shades of vampire Bill than what we’ve seen before.”
Do yourself a favor and read a bunch more about Mariana at the source.

Yes! I think that totally means more Bill flashbacks! I can’t wait until Season 3!
I’m looking forward to seeing Lorena and more of Bill being Vampire Bill, but I’m worried for my Bill/Sookie love. I hope AB doesn’t ruin a good thing.
I just love that Tara is going to be so different then she was in book 3. I hope to continue with my love of all things different from the books.
You & me both Aem. I also hope they give Tara a break already. Doesn’t look like they will, but that woman needs a vacation. Seriously.
Well girls I think we better brace ourselves – I’ve heard Bill and Sookie are in for some rough times a bit too many times now to not believe it – trying to get psyched up for that but not doin so well. I will try to believe in AB and hope that along the way they’ll give SM enough great stuff to keep us happy and win him the recognition he deserves. And we’ll have to keep each other together through it.
As long as the storyline is good and it stays true to the characters then everything will be fine. I just hope they even out the storylines nicely. Season 3 seems way too hectic at the moment.
great interview! I really think based on the hints Mariana give that Lorena kidnaps Bill and feels bad about it in a way. The titles of episdoes 2 and 3 “beautifully broken” and “it hurts me too” I feel are clues to what is coming up. Can’t wait! It will be chance for these talented actors to shine. Oh, and her last sentence, leads me to believe Lorena gets staked just like in the books, but who does the staking? Hmm…
After thinking about this here’s my prediction — Sookie stakes Lorena just like the books. Too many hints on the posters with “Love at Stake”. The event where Lorena has a chance to do something bad and doesn’t for love of Bill sounds like she either has a chance to kill/seriously damage Bill or Sookie and she doesn’t; or she somehow allows Sookie to stake her. But my money’s on Sookie doing a bit of staking.
I don’t read spoilers, I refuse to torture myself with that, but I couldn’t help reading this interview… I know Lorena is a crazy b*tch, but I kidn of like her, after all she made Bill, and I love Bill!!!! Not to mention I love love love the flashbacks scenes…
Book 3 was painful to read… and I’m not quite sure but I think season 3 is gonna be painful to watch -I mean regarding Sookie/Bill storyline- the important thing is, as Shocknawe said, we got each other and together we can overcome whatever rough path they make our favourite lovers go through… I’ll tell you one thing though, as God is my witness *shaking my fist to the screen* I’ll stop watching if they do to Bill what CH did!!! (just kidding I won’t stop watching as I didn’t stoped reading, but I’ll sure be mad!!!)
Bites to y’all my lovely friends!!!
Your comment reflects my feelings exactly. I can’t recall being so depressed about the events in a book as in the third book. I could relate to the character in Stephen King’s book wanting to confront the author about the treatment of a fictional character. Bill’s character is so screwed over by events and ‘vampire’ rules. I also wanted to stop reading because it is painful-but of course I didn’t
I have to agree with y’all here. Book 3 was painful almost too painful to read and ruined the whole series of books for me. I don’t know how I’m going to watch season 3, but I’m gonna try. I just hope AB doesn’t lose me like CH did.
I actually think this will be GREAT for the character of Bill and for Stephen. And yes in the end, Bill and Sookie. My major issue with last season was how underused and whipped Bill was. The last two eps were great because he started to get his swagger back but the middle eps were just painful for me. There is SO MUCH MORE to Bill than just being Sookie’s boyfriend. I want to see his journey, his story and how he deals with redemption. What will he do when he loses his miracle? Sounds like they will be giving Stephen some meaty stuff to deal with and I’m excited for that. The end all be all isn’t Sookie. HOWEVER, in any great story the lovers MUST be parted for their reunion to be that much sweeter. So, I think ultimately they will prevail. But it might be a long stretch of being apart.
yuck
“the hardcore Sookie and Bill fans are going to have some rough road up ahead”
it’s happening, it’s happening…
one year waiting for nothing…why do I smell we won’t see a single hot loving rscene between sookie and bill on season 3?
that adds another year waiting. ok. i’m off to sleep before i pass you my depression :P
we’ll always have Paris…and season 1.
After reading this great interview and all of your comments, I feel a little less guilty about secretly harboring a little sympathy for Lorena after last season. I couldn’t help but feel that decades of unrequited love for Bill have twisted that love into something evil, ugly and cruel. I’m happy to think that the coming season with give us more insight into Lorena’s history, as well as more flashbacks to her relationship with Bill which have been amazing.
As to how Lorena may come to her end – perhaps as a twist on the episode “Release Me”, Lorena, after finally accepting the fact that she can never have Bill’s love, will beg him to stake her to finally end the torment that her existence has become. A little too over the top?
Now I am afraid for Bill&Sookie. They are too beautiful together, if AB separates them I don’t know if I shall continue to look at True Blood. But remind that said AB “Stephen Moyer will not be marginalized. Bill and Sookie may go through some rough patches that last maybe a little longer than Team Bill fans might like, but Bill and Sookie have a connection that will never die.”
Book 3 was pretty much the end of the line for me too. I can’t imagine AB making the same error that CH did. I’m glad we’ll see more of Lorena and Bills past. There’s gotta be some good in her if she loved Bill.
Hookah, if season 3 is anything like book 3, I am outta here and i’m taking my snark and enthusiasm with me. It was crap. I thought I was mistakenly reading another series of books so extreme was my state of WTF? However, I love Mariana and nice of her to throw us some Bill spoilers. I’m bored of hearing about every man and his werewolf.
I do agree with the majority, Book 3 was depressing. I just finished Book 4. CH really did Bill an injustice. She really made him a “cold jerk”. She should have written it better. Of course, she has the right to chose the direction to take with characters. Watching the show, and then the books, has a different element. In Book 4, the first time S and E make love, I felt cheated. What the hell was that? It lacked emotion and made me feel like it was a one night stand. Which is what I felt, every time I read Book 4. But of course, that is my opinion. But I tell you my fellow friends, it is definitely hard to read the books, but I push myself to read on.
Thank Good AB has made the connection of B/S more compelling on True Blood. It is a connection that is magical and “forever”.
Novel you have just took the words out of my mouth!!!! When Sookie and Eric got into that shower together on Dead to The World there was no emotion, no feelings, no nothing… it was pure lust and the most disgutsing -hooker having sex with a truckdriver- kind of thing of lust… she sleept with him because she was horney! And while I don’t necessarily have a problem with that and I think scratching an itch is not the end of the world on for a friday night after one too many tequila shot… I don’t thinks it’s ok sleeping with a guy if you’re in love with another… and specially I am not ok with my current literary heorine doing the same things I would do any given weekend… She’s supposed to be better than me -not that I get to sleep with hunky viking on any given weekend, you know what I mean- but still!!! She betrayed Bill when she got into that shower with Eric and worst of all she betrayed me!!!
And eventhough book 3 was painful to read… I have to say it’s atually one fo my favourites, with all its pain, with all its crazyness… I don’t know, I really want to see season 3… I’m self-destructive like that!
Everyone has said what I wanted to say, so I will take another tack. Isn’t it wonderful what Mariana has said about Stephen! He IS the life of the party! We know this, as we have seen the photos at the SAGs, standingup and having the whole table in laughter!
