Earth Day: True Blood’s Kristin Bauer at Save the Whales Rally
By Lividity on Apr 22 2010 | 15 Comments »Guest correspondent and friend of the site, NotHoney, reported in from the Earth Day, Save the Whales Rally in Washington D.C. where Kristin Bauer spoke today. Here’s her account of the event. Special thanks go out to NotHoney!
Today, to celebrate Earth Day, I attended IFAW’s Rally for the Whales on the National Mall featuring Kristin Bauer, who plays Pam the vampire on HBO’s hit series, “True Blood.” It’s especially important on this 40th anniversary of Earth Day to draw attention to whale hunting because the Obama Administration plans to announce the lifting of the ban on commercial whaling. Today. Earth Day.

During his campaign in 2008, Obama promised to strengthen protections for whales. He also promised no new offshore drilling and he broke that promise. Now, he’s breaking his promise to protect whales from commercial hunting.
The rally was fairly well attended for a weekday afternoon in the District. I was there on my lunch hour and couldn’t stay for the march to the White House. I did, however, get to meet Kristin and her husband, Abri VanStraten. I met Abri first, who then pointed out his wife, talking to a group of people attending the rally. Abri called Kristin over and I introduced myself, even mentioned Bill’s Wiki’d Women, and she seemed to have heard of the forum. She is much prettier in person than on the TV screen and her husband is quite handsome, too.
We chatted about the incredible decision by President Obama to break his campaign promise to protect whales from hunting and to stop the Japanese whalers. I commented that if Obama could lift the whaling ban, what’s to stop him from lifting the ban on harp seal fur in the U.S.? Kristin agreed it was a possibility and said it infuriates her after 26 years of the ban to be fighting to protect whales from hunters.

Kristin’s speech was the most personal and, from where I stood, the most emotional. She became teary when talking about the injustice of harpooning to death our planet’s largest mammals, and asked everyone to support IFAW’s efforts to keep the whaling ban in place.
One of the things she asked us to do is to download a song written by her musician husband, Abri VanStraten. He wrote the song especially for the whale campaign and you can get it on CD Baby. It’s a $2 download and the money goes to IFAW’s whale campaign. Tell all your friends to download this lovely song! If that isn’t enough and you want to do more, donate to IFAW directly on their Web site. If you really want direct action against whalers, donate to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Every year they sail to the southern ocean whale sanctuary and physically try to keep the Japanese from killing whales.
Write to your Congressional members and ask them to keep the whaling ban in place. Write to the White House via IFAW. Tell President Obama that you stand with 75 percent of Americans who favor a ban on commercial whaling. Kristen also asked everyone to call the White House and voice our anger at the lifting of the whaling ban with this message: “President Obama: Stop the sellout and save the whales!” Call the White House comment line at (202) 456-1111.

Thanks again NotHoney! Wonderful reporting for a darned worthwhile cause!
You’re very welcome. I’ve supported the Sea Shepherds for years and I’m happy to bring the cause to more people. Donate, y’all! Don’t eat krill (that’s whale food).
:D cool!!
Thanks NH. Are you in the photos??
Glad you were there for a great cause and that you caught up with Kristen and Abri. Thank you for reporting.
I also believe in Sea Shepherd. They operate from OZ as well, due to the whaling, and I met Richard Dean Anderson who coincided his trip to OZ to do a convention to be here when Sea Shepherd pulled into Tasmania.
Great work!
Thanks! Cool about meeting RDA and supporting the Sea Shepherds. I did meet Paul Watson once, briefly, a couple of years ago out at the sanctuary where I volunteer. I wasn’t very articulate. ;-) There is a photo of Kristen and I but I didn’t want it on a public Web site.
Honey thanks so much for some great coverage and pictures. Awesome!
Nice one Honey, thanks for reporting. My useless government have announced they will not be supporting the proposed commercial whaling treaty. Wonder why they grew a set of balls for a change? Hopefully Obama follows suit.
This just doesn’t sound right does it? These celebrities fight for the oceans, the whales, the dolphins but don’t give a crap about human life and abortion. What is wrong with these people. Twisited, twisited, twisted.
Everything sounds right about what Kristin is doing. Kristin is taking the time to work for something she feels strongly about. You don’t know her or how she feels about anything else. Your comment is insulting and uninformed at best.
We don’t need this stuff here; this is a fundamentalist free zone.
Really. No fundamentalists here. This is the very first time I’m close to delete a comment.
We are not interested in debating a woman’s right to choose here. Kristin is supporting a very worthy cause and we at The Nest think its awesome. Take it elsewhere please.
Good for you Kristin !!!! A worthy cause no doubt.
Nothoney I envy you being there!! Would have loved to join in with you all !!!!
Thanks for the report and the pics. Kristin is truly a lovely person in side and out.
[...] Anyway, back to our weekend. It was great. What can I say? We had our breakfast and went to Baton Rouge Zoo. They had some kind of ‘Party for the Planet’ going on to celebrate Earth Day. Did you know that Vampire Pam was also supporting Earth Day? http://www.trueblood-news.com/earth-day-true-bloods-kristin-bauer-at-save-the-whales-rally [...]

Here’s a youtube with Kristen speaking about the rally! :D
Great work, Kristen.I am also a member of IFAW and am VERY proud of your work.Hope the sharks will be listening to your pleas…it is tragic what some evil humans do to animals…I wish I were a powerful vampire – who could guard whales and all other animal species on this Planet. You are GREAT Kristen , just like Pam, the character in Charlaines books…xx
