Charlaine Harris:”Eric turned out to be more popular than I expected”

Hours before “Dead in the Family” is released, a new interview with Charlaine reveals once again, her ability to stay away from any implicated response about Sookie Stackhouse’s love fate. R.J. Carter from The Trades has interviewed her and here’s the result of the interview for you… starting with a juicy excerpt.

Carrie – The new book seems to focus on Sookie’s family and friends. Are you surprised about how popular Eric’s character has become, and is it because of that popularity that we continue to see Sookie in a relationship with him rather than with Bill?
That’s a complicated question. The book is about families of all sorts, not just Sookie’s. It’s about the different kinds of families that you can have, and how much trouble they can cause you. I think that we’re all familiar with that, probably.
Eric turned out to be more popular than I expected, but the books are still going the way I planned on them going, regardless of the popularity of one character over another.
Carrie – Has the television show had any influence in your approach to the books?
You know, I don’t think so. If it has, it’s unconscious on my part, because I’m way ahead of the storytelling in the TV show. I’m writing Book Eleven, and Alan [Ball] is on Book Three.

Eric is soo important and he deserves it and is popularity is not a problem for her becouse of course Sookie and Eeric ‘s life can’t be apart……
i’m so happy fot them after book 10…i know they may have trobles ar be apart for some good reasons but in the end he is her right man..he always was…so i’m sooooo not woried about Harris bullshitting with peolpe who believe in evrything she said without even thinking….^^
Harris amuse me so much^^
Well, Eric *does* have a ‘gracious plenty’ of *everything*. What’s not to L-O-V-E?
i loving it! :D

CH just so you know, Eric wasn’t and isn’t popular with me. I can’t get over some of the things she says in this interview and interviews from the past. CH didn’t think Eric would be so popular…..Bill’s character is hard to write……I’m tired of writing about vampires……she doesn’t write for her audience…….she doesn’t understand the Team Bill/Eric thingy……..what? She created the characters, the story, the supes, the Teams……I don’t think I understand this woman!
I’ve reached a zen state of not giving a shit anymore beyond mild curiousity. Her books are too bloody short anyways. If i’m going to spend money, the book better be at least 400 packed pages. The SVM were not written for us, darlin’, despite being sucked into buying them by the awesome promise of the show.
Wait, I forgot this one: CH said the books are going the way she planned? In more then one past interview, she’s said she has no idea what she’s going to write about until she actually writes? Again…..what? The only thing she’s been consistent with is, she knew who Sookie would end up with from the beginning.
*deep breath* I wish I could reach a zen state, but I haven’t and it really seems like CH will have Sook wind up w/ Sam or Quinn. If you want E/S permanently together read fan fiction.
Call me crazy, and that’s my name, but I am still rooting for Sookie and Bill. Nothing else will satisfy me. At least that will happen (and it had better) on True Blood.
I do have a sneaking suspicion that Sookie will end up with Sam in the books. Oh well, at least it won’t be the big blond manipulator, which pleases me no end.
I am for you crazy for bill. I really whant sookie and bill together, in some form or another, I am just not shure it will be in a romatic way. I do not like the idea of her ending up with eric, as he is not my favorite at all. For some reason I can not see her with sam. I can not see her whanting to have children that shift. I think that charlane likes to tease us with who sookie will end up with, as it is always either bill or eric. For some reason I can see sookie remaining independent as she has grown up to be, and just using her teleptic skills to help people, human or not, and have bill as a veary close friend or something. I am not convinced sookie will end up with anybody.
I think there are lots of hints that it won’t be Eric with Sookie in the end.
-He was conveniently missing for part of book 9, if she didn’t get the extended book deal she could have written him either way for book 10. The fact that he’s with Sookie, with 3 more books means more big changes have to come. They have to be big – the stakes get higher near the end of a story.
-Her comment above about writing it the way she planned it, no matter how popular Eric became just might be her being honest and not cagey.
-The whole Sookie and Eric being the same thing does not make for a satisfying couple. Hair the same, eyes the same – too much like siblings. It’s a phase she’s going through. Finding your forever partner is about finding your compliment, not your mirror image.
-Coming full circle or coming home makes a satisfying ending. Home to somebody who shares your values and your community, not your personality.
-CH obviously has a big thing for Eric – sees him as the super hero. I think she plans a bigger than life ending for him – settling down with Sookie is too small.
I am kind of leaning towards your way of thinking. A lot of water can flow under the bridge with 3 more books. I don’t think she thinks Eric is some sort of super hero, though, but I reckon she can see the dollar signs he brings in! I reckon she will give him the flick and bring Bill back as she knows there is a huge following from TB and it will bring more $$$$$.
I’ve been more or less under the assumption CH would start and end with Bill, the full circle thing, but now….I just don’t know.
I will say this: if Sookie and Sam every do fall in love and take a roll in the hay, it wil have to be some kind of crazy, wonderful, perfect, emotional, carry-me-away-to-the-castle-in-the-sky sort of thing because seriousy, after Bill, Eric and Quinn….dude, that’s gonna be a tough act to follow!
in my dreams, sookie hooks up with quinn for a night of fun and ends up pregnant with twins. bill and sookie become good friends,
The books were always slanted towards Eric. It’s Alan Ball who gave the slant to Bill…by taking it away from Eric…and making Eric more of a villain than the books had him. If there ever is an end I doubt Sookie will “end up” with either of them…unless she becomes a vampire herself or a cure for the “virus” is found, LOL!
Charlaine kind of hints that she might eliminate Eric in future books (Eric turned out to be more popular than I expected, but the books are still going the way I planned on them going, regardless of the popularity of one character over another), and that will be the end of my interest in the story as Eric is the only one I care about.I agree that Alan Ball gave far too much credit to Bill, as we all know that Eric killed Long Shadow to save Sookie in the books and never invited Lorena to Dallas. Also, Jessica does not exist, and I personally find her very annoying in the series. That cheap meat called Yvetta does not appear in the original stories neither, another insult to Eric Northman…and Bill NEVER proposed to Sookie in the books, that might have been arranged to celebrate Anna engagement of Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer…she should have gone after Alex…
