Charlaine Harris will be the main luncheon speaker March 3 at SleuthFest in Orlando, Florida.  She spoke with Orlando Sentinel about ending the Sookie Stackhouse series and the differences between what’s on the page compared to what’s on the small screen on True Blood:

The TV series has benefited from the tensions between vampires Bill and Eric. How central is that to your story?
They [the actors] are wonderful, but the story is very different from my story. It was never a Bill vs. Eric situation in my mind.
How has Sookie changed over time? Is she more fun write these days?
I don’t write Anna Paquin, I write Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie is always a lot of fun to write. She’s growing, changing, She’s very strong. She’s a girl girl. She’d be OK on her own without a guy. She’d like to have a relationship. It’s not necessary to her happiness.
Are you happy with the decisions “True Blood” executive producer Alan Ball has made?
Certainly I’ve had thoughts about that. I’m very fond of Alan. I think he’s a genius. He’s made good decisions for television. He’s not consciously trying to imitate the books. That would be boring for him and boring for me. If I knew what was going to happen, why would I watch? Viewers and readers are getting two experiences.
He is described as the creator, but I think of you as the creator.
I am the creator. When I’m on the set they call me the Maker. But he’s the creator of that world visually, no doubt about it. It all came from his brain and his talent for hiring the right people for the right jobs.

Five Good Reasons To Keep True Blood On The Air

true blood logo true blood merchandise hbo dvdblu ray Jacob at HBO Watch wrote up a nice piece on “Why True Blood won’t be canceled any time soon” that we wanted to share with you guys. His reasons:

Ratings are steady.
DVD sales are incredible.
Syndication and overseas deals are super-lucrative
There’s so much source material left
Fans don’t want it to end.

Excerpt regarding the DVD/Blu-ray sales:

One of the more obvious ways HBO makes money on a program is through DVD and Blu-Ray sales.  Earlier I quoted a season of True Blood at ~$50 million.  With that number in hand would it surprise you to learn that the first season of True Blood on DVD brought in a staggering $26 million dollars… in it’s first two weeks?!  Now those numbers may have declined with subsequent seasons but even the third season  debuted at #1, and that’s based on UNITS sold, not dollars!  The bottom line is this: HBO makes half of it’s money back on any given season of True Blood immediately following it’s digital release.  Not too shabby considering all of the other tangibles and intangibles True Blood has going for it.

Fangirls Speak Out: Twilight Fans – An Open Letter

Dear Twihards,

Recently it has come to the attention of the True Blood fan community that an article has appeared in the New York Post, reporting how Robert Pattinson has dissed Twilight’s rivals:

edward cullen twilight 12469 300x288 true blood fangirls speak out

Other vampires are available.

A human girl in love with a vampire has become one of the most common concepts in pop culture. But Robert Pattinson dismisses vampire TV shows such as “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” as “Twilight” copycats.

“It’s like that Coke versus Pepsi thing, and how Coke just said ‘There’s a reason everyone compares themselves to us,’” he said, according to Web site Hollywood Life. “‘Twilight’ was the original and everybody’s trying to copy it. They’re all just trying to jump aboard the ‘Twilight’ train.”

Now it’s entirely possible that his words were taken out of context, or he was just kidding around, but the media has chosen to see this as a disparaging remark about True Blood.  I’ve noticed that you Twilight fans are naturally very defensive of anything that Mr. Pattinson has to say, and I’ve also noticed that many of you do tend to share this attitude that True Blood and The Vampire Diaries are just poor relatives of Twilight.  Here is a typical quote I have found from a Twilight fan responding to those who have criticised Robert for sounding ignorant in his remark:

“rob is so right about all these nonsense copycats.they were just trying to play a copy paste game.,,, ,,TWILIGHT’S CASTS are soooooo amazing that they made a blockbuster movie .chill and relax bcoz twilight was the one started these vampires obsessed(THE TRUTH!!!)”

Wow, such an articulate argument!  However, there’s something I’d like to clear up – True Blood is based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, entitled The Southern Vampire Mysteries (give them a read, if you can cope with all the saucy stuff without your brains exploding).  The first of these was published in 2001.  Twilight, as I’m sure you’re well aware, was published in 2005.  Likewise the first Vampire Diaries novel was published in 1991.  True Blood actually first aired in September 2008, several months before the release of Twilight the movie.  So just in case you are among the Twihards accusing these shows of bandwagon-jumping, it’s important to note that both pre-dated Twilight.
