Denis O’Hare, the King of Mississippi is getting a lot of media attention since he debuted in True Blood episode 2 last night. The more I read what Denis has to say about his character, the more I know this dude is really going to bring it this year. Also, not only is he the oldest vampire we’ve met so far, but he is by far the most powerful as he possesses super-vampire strength! Minor spoilers in here.
TVGuide.com: Had you read the books or seen the show before signing on?
Denis O’Hare: I was definitely a fan [of the show]. I hadn’t read the books; I’ve read them since and enjoyed them very much. I was a fan of Six Feet Under and was very sad when it ended, so I was not ready to switch my allegiance to another show. So I was like, “I’m not watching this True Blood.” Then a friend got a bootleg copy of the first four episodes and by the third one, I was irrevocably hooked. When we finished the fourth one, I was running to the phone and calling [the cable company], begging them to give me HBO On Demand so I could watch the rest of the season immediately.
TVGuide.com: What did Alan Ball tell you about Russell going in?
O’Hare: He said he has a Southern accent, and is very charming, very powerful and very deadly.
TVGuide.com: Tell me about the King of Mississippi.
O’Hare: Russell is the oldest vampire we’ve yet to meet, and is therefore the most powerful. His physical power is kind of staggering. At one point, a vampire attacks him and Russell twitches his shoulder and the vampire flies off him and hits the ceiling. He is beyond morality, an ancient Celt, 2,800 years old, a pagan. Certainly he’s assimilated and evolved, but at heart he’s a pagan druid creature, an earth-worshipper who’s incredibly concerned with nature. Eventually, we’ll hear his vision for the world, which is that humans need to step aside and let vampires rule because humans are squandering the earth and ruining their habitat. Read More »
NYPost’s Popwrap interviewed Theo Alexander who plays Talbot, the King of Mississippi’s husband in True Blood. We find out how Talbot met Russell, that Alan Ball will kill you if you leak spoilers, and that fighting fuels good sex. Oh yeah, there’s also some reference to a sex scene with Eric – but I dunno if I’m convinced that scene is with Eric and not with someone else.
PopWrap: How did you get hired to play Talbot?
Theo Alexander: This part was out for a British actor, but my agent thought I would do a great job with it. He was a very Dionysian, very sexual, very Greek! It couldn’t be anything but Greek in my eyes. So my agent called the casting director and they really wanted a British actor, but they said, “please, just see him – he’s perfect.” So I went to the audition dressed in my kimono, in character and walk in on a room of 16 people – including Alan Ball, so I’m shaking. The casting director says, this is Theo, he’s Italian. So I turn to her as Talbot, and say, “excuse me, I’m Greek!” and that propelled me into the character. Talbot would have said that, he likes to speak his mind.
PW: Given Talbot and Russell’s extensive history together, what kind of pre-production work did you and Denis O’Hare [who plays Russell] do?
Theo: I have to say, it’s a blessing to have an amazing actor on your side. He called me when I got the part and we started working on our history before shooting. We met, we talked, we went to dinner, we had to create a 700-year history. It wasn’t easy but in order to be in love with someone on screen you have to really love them in real life. And Denis is very easy to fall in love with. He’s a great guy and an amazing actor – I already admired him, so it wasn’t that hard.
PW: So without going into too much detail, what kind of backstory did you two come up with?
Theo: We met in the Byzantine, where I was royalty and I left with Russell. He didn’t turn me in the beginning. We were mercenaries, we would give our services to Kings who needed us in battle. In one of those battles I got wounded and would have died, but he wanted it to be my decision. He loved me so much he didn’t want to bestow that curse upon me, but I wanted it. So he turned me and I’ve been paying ever since. Read More »
Episode 2, “Beautifully Broken” finally introduced us to Russell Edgington, the King of Mississippi. And while the King seems to have substantial power among vampires (after all, he’s older than Godric), King Russell appears to crave more. Here, Denis O’Hare shares some additional info about his character and his motivations. Very minor spoilery.
“I have plans,” actor Denis O’Hare says of his character. “I am 2,800 years old and I am the oldest and the strongest vampire.”
And when the oldest, strongest vampire in the land says that he has “plans,” think bloody redecorating on a global scale with the human race as throw pillows.
“Russell intends to take over the world,” O’Hare tells PEOPLE. “He feels that human beings have squandered their stewardship of the earth by not treating it well. And he is an old Celt, a Druid, who was an earth-worshipper, and he feels like he needs to take over.”
The reign of terror is really more of a reign in response to human error, but according to O’Hare, Russell isn’t all doom and gloom.
“I have a boyfriend on the show,” the actor says. “Talbot — he’s a beautiful Greek man and we’ve been together 700 years.”
While it’s safe to say that none of us will ever know what it is to feel the 700-year itch, O’Hare was kind enough to let us in on the secrets to keeping a relationship together for nearly a millennium.
“When you get to be 2,800 years old, you’ve seen it all, you’ve tried all of the positions. Nothing surprises you because you’ve tasted everything,” O’Hare says with a laugh. “A marriage at that point is more than just sex. It’s about supporting each other and mutual interests. It’s about telling the truth even when it hurts. It’s about sharing a willing live human!”
PC: HBO
HBO just released a season 3 picture of King Russell and his vampire husband Talbot. Denis O’Hare plays Russell Edgington the 2,700 yr old vampire king of Mississippi and Theo Alexander as his 700 yr old companion. I never knew old could look so goood!
