“The Submission,” an off Broadway play starring Rutina Wesley, officially premiered Sept. 27 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City. According to Playbill.com, the play centers around a Jonathan Groff’s character, Danny Larsen, who “hides under the female pen name Shaleeha G’ntamobi. When his drama about an African-American family is accepted into the nation’s preeminent theatre festival, he is faced with a multitude of difficult decisions. Wesley’s character, however, is faced with the role of a lifetime, stepping in as G’ntamobi and passing off the work as her own until the carefully devised plan seems to backfire.” Here is Rutina on opening night with her cast mates Jonathan Groff, Eddie Kaye Thomas, and Will Rogers at curtain call and the after party, as well as exclusive footage from Playbill.com.

Rutina Wesley appeared on Good Day New York to promote her role in the off Broadway play “The Submission,” written by playwright Jeff Talbott, that also stars actors Jonathan Groff and Eddie Kaye Thomas. While this production marks Rutina’s return to the stage, she does reveal that modern day interruptions (cell phones ringing!) can be a distraction for actors. Rutina also said she will be back filming True Blood in November, but not quite sure what’s in store for Tara in season 5. All theater-loving New York Truebies should be sure to check the play out; it runs at the Lucile Lortel Theater at 121 Christopher Street from Sept. 27 until Oct. 22.
