This week, God Hates Fangs True Blood Podcast (hosted by my husband and I) were lucky enough to bag an interview with Michael McMillian, the man behind Steve Newlin and co-writer of the True Blood: Tainted Love comics. He gave us the lowdown on Steve Newlin’s return, getting fitted for his fangs, and the future of the True Blood comic series. He confirmed not only that the comics will now be an ongoing monthly series, but also gave us the excellent news that he will be returning to write for them:
“IDW is going to be launching a new ongoing True Blood monthly comic book. So they’re tossing out doing these sets of six issue series, they’re just gonna do an ongoing book, and I’m back on as series regular co-writer.
What we’re gonna do is focus on smaller story arcs, fewer characters at a time, and then we’ll do an issue where it’s just one character.”
I’m sure that fans of the comic books, who were full of praise for the arc that Michael co-wrote, will be delighted to hear this!
Naturally he was tight-lipped about exactly what we can expect in season five, but he did give this intriguing insight:
“It’s gonna be really, really good. The whole season so far has been great. It’s very vampire centred.
I think season five is gonna start paying off the promises of the first four seasons. It’s like, ok, now you know the way the world works, we’ve introduced these separate plotlines, these separate characters, and it’s really starting to come together this season in a big, big way.”

I’m a big comic book geek, especially when it comes to vampire comics. So when it was announced that IDW, the publishers behind the Spike and Angel series, were going to be releasing a series of True Blood comics, I had a massive nerd-gasm. Fourteen issues in, and this week saw the news that IDW will be making the True Blood comic series an ongoing monthly release from spring 2012. While this comes as welcome news, I can’t help but feel a degree of trepidation.

True Blood Comic issues 1-12
On paper, the True Blood comics sound like they couldn’t possibly fail to live up to awesomeness of the show that inspired them. The first six-issue arc, All Together Now, has a storyline conceived by head honcho Alan Ball and fellow True Blood staff writers Kate Barnow and Elisabeth Finch. The script is co-written by David Tischman, of the excellent Bite Club comics on Vertigo (like True Blood meets The Sopranos!), and illustrated by David Messina, who did a superb job on the Spike and Angel comics. The second arc, Tainted Love, mixed things up a bit by bringing in Michael McMillian, known to fans as the guy who plays vampire-hating preacher Steve Newlin in the show, to co-write the script. He’s no newcomer to the comic world – check out him and Zachary Quinto’s comic Lucid, a crazy mix of Arthurian legend and secret agents! Also new to the team was writer Marc Andreyko, currently helming the Let the Right One In prequel comics, and illustrator Joe Corroney, a celebrated Star Wars artist for LucasArts, who’s also worked on the Spike and Angel comics. Right now we’re mid-way through the third arc, The French Quarter, and the original team are back, with a story that follows on from the cliffhanger in issue six.

Comic Sookie also has numerous three-way fantasies.
The depictions of characters can’t be faulted, the dialogue crackles with lewdness and hilarity that makes it sound like it could have come straight out of the show, and the tone is the perfect blend of sexy and freaky. All Together Now features an ancient swamp monster that traps everyone in Merlotte’s and feeds off of their shame. Tainted Love is about a contaminated batch of TruBlood that sends vampires bat-shit crazy, and The French Quarter is about Sookie, Eric and Bill travelling to New Orleans to investigate a series of vampire slayings. All fun stuff and highly entertaining.

I know we are all a little sad that the 9-month wait to watch new episodes of our beloved show True Blood has begun, but fret not Truebies! You can still get your True Blood fix by checking out our site for up-to-date information on your favorite True Blood actors and also what they’ve got for sale over at the HBO Store.
We will be featuring items that are of particular interest and hope you will enjoy. First up, the hardcover edition of Tainted Love. The book sells for $24.99, and you can buy it here.
I have been getting all of the comic books and so far the Tainted Love series has been my favorite. The illustrations are top-notch and the story was funnier and co-written by Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin). So if you haven’t purchased the individual comic books, you can get them all in this handy hardcover.
True Blood, Vol. 2: Tainted Love
Marc Andreyko, Michael McMillian (w) • Joe Corroney (a) • J. Scott Campbell (c)
Hoyt, the human boyfriend of Jessica, tries to do a good deed… and it doesn’t go unpunished! Hoyt notices that Jessica has been staring at a poster for a local prom night, which leads him to romantically scheme to throw a surprise one for her at Merlotte’s (with the help of friends Sookie, Sam and Tara). Unfortunately, things go awry when Jessica drinks a bit too much of the punch, which just happens to be part of a tainted batch of Tru Blood! Now out of control on a rampage into the night, Hoyt, Bill and Jason do their best to help their friend. Meanwhile, Sookie and Lafayette try to help Jessica a little differently, by seeking out Eric, and the local sheriff! It’s a thrill ride beyond compare as they fight to bring Jessica back to the safety of Bon Temps stretches dangerously close to dawn.

Reverend Newlin is back! And nobody’s more thrilled than us here at TB-N. I see a few of you have noticed that Rev Steve was checking out the Stackhouse bod in the season finale. Here’s what Michael McMillian had to say about Steve’s attraction to Jason:
“It seems really clear to me that Steve was always just as attracted to Jason as his wife was,” McMillian says. “In his eyes, Jason Stackhouse is the guy that Steve really wanted to be. I think he had a really heavy man-crush on him … that might have gone a bit deeper. And I think Steve is more heartbroken that Jason slept with Sarah than he is that Sarah slept with Jason, if you know what I mean. I have my own theories and ideas of what Steve’s been up to off-screen – and I’m sure the fans do, too – and I’m sure the writers will fill that in. But I think the fact that he’s coming back for Jason is linked to that emotional undercurrent he was feeling in Season 2. I have no idea where the show is headed, but it’s great to be back, even just for a few hours on set.”

The wonderful cast of our favorite show gives tips to fans about the upcoming Comic-Con via The Hollywood Reporter.

DEBORAH ANN WOLL
What panel would you stand in line all day for?
Woll: RiffTrax with Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. I own so many movies that I’m ashamed I own specifically because I have a RiffTrax that goes with them. They always do a panel with a live RiffTrax. Last year, we had our True Blood panel and the RiffTrax panel was right afterward. I dashed offstage, went backstage and changed into my Hit-Girl outfit, stuffed my designer dress in a duffle bag and ran to their panel.
THR: What questions do you recommend fans not ask at panels?
Woll: Spoilers — because we can’t answer them. If you ask us what’s going to happen, we have nothing to say. It takes up time because we can’t say anything but watch it and I hope you enjoy it.
THR: Any can’t-miss parts of Comic-Con?
Woll: If you go to Comic-Con, go to Artists’ Alley. Meet the artists and see their drawings; a lot of them will do commission stuff ad for $50 you can get a drawing that’s incredible.

We’ve all seen them, carrying their hate signs and picketing outside of Fangtasia and other vampire bars. They chant in unison, “Steve Newlin’s right; you’re devils of the night!” at any and all entering or leaving the establishment. But what of Steve Newlin? He’s the leader of the Fellowship of the Sun, the figurehead on a very popular line of anti-vampire assault rifles, and yet – he’s gone, and no one is even talking about it. Was he abducted? Or has he staged his own disappearance? His car was found on TX route 43 which seems to be east of Dallas and west of Shreveport.
So… have you seen him?
