Bill's Jealous Maker
Mariana Klaveno plays Lorena, Bill’s jealous Maker and the character most True Blood fans love to hate. In another charming interview, the actor spoke about the Emmy nominations, working on True Blood, and, of course, keeping her day job (the question she seems to answer most often).
“She’s not the most likable character,” Klaveno concedes to USA Today, speaking of Lorena. But, “I’m not as evil as Lorena. I know some people have a hard time making that distinction between myself and the character. I get recognized everywhere I go, so I think that just is a testament to how popular the show is. But luckily, nobody has booed or hissed or come at me with a stake. Everyone has been very lovely and warm and excited to talk with somebody from the show.”
Anything goes on True Blood and Klaveno is happy to have the opportunity to show her range: ”The scale of the show, it’s like a dream. You get to show up for work and put on these amazing costumes and have this dramatic makeup and do all kinds of crazy stunts and you’re splashed with the blood. It’s like playing dress-up in a lot of ways. It’s the most fun I think you can have. This character, in particular, is kind of a dream in terms of showcasing yourself as an actor. I’ve gotten to go so many places on the spectrum, and, quite literally, in time, which is quite rare for a television role.”

Mariana Klaveno spoke with ABC about True Blood and Lorena’s “love-hate” relationship with Bill. She talks about keeping her hostess job through Season Two, filming “that” scene, working with Stephen Moyer, reading Ms. Harris’ books, and more. While nothing earth-shattering is revealed, Mariana seems like such a lovely individual and gives a delightful interview. Enjoy!

Mariana Klaveno
Mariana Klaveno was a guest judge at this year’s LA Shorts Festival in West Hollywood. Life has photos of her arrival at Laemmle Sunset 5 Theatre on July 22nd.
“I’m excited to see the films,” she said. “This is my first time as a juror. I like to see directors stretch themselves creatively and do different things that they would normally do in a feature length format so I’m excited to see it. These are a lot of the places where up-and-coming directors really find their voice and their niche.”
She said, of her co-star Alexander Skarsgard, “He’s dreamy and he’s quite lovely.”
Mariana said the show’s popularity has been a lot to take in: “It’s a bit overwhelming but it’s really fun to be a part of something that is so loved and that people are so passionate about.”

Lorena and Bill
On a show that commingles sex and violence as a general rule, that last encounter between Bill and Lorena may have shredded the envelope: testing the limits of vampire-on-vampire hate-sex, Bill twisted Lorena’s head completely around between thrusts — and true to Lorena’s malevolent nature, she loved it.
With True Blood resuming its run this weekend, she called up Movieline to discuss exactly how they made it work, why Lorena just can’t get over Bill, and how J.J. Abrams is inadvertently responsible.
So you had a very, shall we say, “head-turning” scene in episode three? You could say that. You could say “twisted.”
I’m sure you’re going to hear all of those jokes. We were making them on the day of filming, trust me.
Please tell me what your reaction was when you read that. I think my jaw dropped to the floor, and my initial thought was, “Oh, my poor parents.” [Laughs] There was sort of an anxiety about it, but upon reflection, I realized it was going to very much be a water-cooler scene for the season, and given the choice, I’d rather be in the water-cooler scene than not. I made my peace with it, although I’m nervous to actually see it! I’ve seen it in pieces because I had to go back and do sound for it, but I have not seen the finished product yet.
It’s insane. It was kind of insane, wasn’t it? Unfortunately, so many great scenes happen in episode three, and I don’t know that anyone will remember them when the last moment of the episode occurs.

True Blood has released a fun and informative video that not only covers how to kill a vampire, but maker/child relationships, vampiric powers and the political hierarchy of vampires.

“At her core she’s lonely and heartbroken because she so strongly loved Bill,” said True Blood’s Mariana Klaveno in a recent interview:
Speaking to TV Guide, Klaveno explained that Lorena still longs to be in a relationship with Bill (Stephen Moyer).
She said: “At her core she’s lonely and heartbroken because she so strongly loved Bill.”
Klaveno also suggested that Lorena will clash with Bill’s current partner Sookie, played by Anna Paquin.
“It’s fair to say Lorena and Sookie will exchange words,” she said. “She’ll show a few different sides of herself this season that may surprise people.”

The “twisted” sex scene between Bill Compton & Lorena is getting a lot of commentary in the blogosphere since the True Blood season 3 episode 3 entitled, “It Hurts Me Too” aired last Sunday. The much discussed scene has recently been listed in the Hall of Shame on the National Organization for Women’s (NOW) website. The article urges the audience to write to HBO to “tell them what you think about this violent, misogynistic scene in True Blood.”
I know that there are various reaction levels: of justice being done, acceptance, outrage & disgust provoked by this one scene. One thing is for sure, nobody has reacted with indifference. The question I am pondering after reading their take, is what if the roles had been reversed and it was a male vampire being so in “love” with the female vamp, that he compelled her to have sex with him and she was the one doing the twisting? Would that affect how we all interpreted this act?
Offender: Television show True Blood
Media Outlet: HBO, first airing 6-27-10
The Offense: Vampire Bill Compton has violent sex with his nemesis/”maker” Lorena, during which he twists her head around backward.
NOW’s Analysis: Here’s a quick backgrounder for the uninitiated: HBO’s True Blood is based on a series of books about vampires and other super-natural characters. The show frequently contains explicit sex and violence. Bill is a main character and romantic interest for the female lead, Sookie. Currently Bill is going through a personal crisis about loving a human while being controlled by vampire Lorena, who turned him into a vampire long ago and keeps popping up despite his attempts to break away from her. Lorena is the classic “bitch” character who viewers are encouraged to hate. Bill definitely despises her, but vampire rules compel him to follow his maker’s commands.
In this context, Lorena asks Bill to make love to her. He says “never” but proceeds to throw her on the bed and rip off her clothes. Apparently, he can’t stop himself from having sex with her, but in a form of protest, Bill literally twists her neck, turning her face around backward. He continues to have sex with her as the camera provides us with a wide shot that is disturbing, to say the least. Facing the floor, with blood spilling out of her mouth, Lorena proclaims to Bill that she still loves him.
True Blood might be make-believe, but the parallels to real life in this scene are too horrifying to ignore. The scene taps into a hatred of women that still exists in our society — a revulsion toward women with power and a desire to punish them for making men feel weak. Yes, we’re supposed to be shocked. This is our wake up call that Bill might not be a suitable lifemate for Sookie. But let’s forget for a minute who or what these characters are: Here is a scene that was written and filmed to allow viewers to watch a man have violent sex with a woman he hates so much he twists her head around, and she loves him all the more for it. Remember, the character of Lorena is fictional, her persona and actions are the creation of writers, directors and producers. She is presented, simultaneously, as a hideous, controlling “bitch” and a pitiful, deluded stalker. And while we are supposed to be disgusted by Bill’s violence, aren’t we given permission to believe, just a tiny bit, that this woman got what was coming to her? Bad girls deserve to get hurt, and, besides, they like it — right? Thanks, but no thanks, True Blood for this messed up depiction of women, men, violence and sex.

Mariana Klaveno, who plays Lorena, knows that she isn’t a fan-favorite (except for me, and maybe like three other people). Lorena’s a complex character, and so much more than simply a villain in the True Blood world – she’s driven by unrequited love for her William, as well as an unhealthy dose of self-loathing, and she’s been in some of the most powerful scenes on the show. Playing Lorena requires Mariana to play brooding beauty, charming, witty, and cruel, often in the same scene.
Mariana spoke with Back Stage about embodying a villain, avoiding the urge to Google herself, and why she kept her job as a waitress through the second season of True Blood.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO PLAY THIS INCREDIBLY RICH, MEATY VILLAIN? It’s incredible. I could not have dreamed up this part. Last season, every script I got, with the ’20s flashback and the ’30s flashback, I just was pinching myself. It’s so much fun. She’s so flawed and fabulous. I love all of that; she is not perfect, and I love her all the more for it. I hope people love to hate her. I know she’s certainly not somebody that you’re rooting for.
THE SHOW SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN PAINS, ESPECIALLY WITH THOSE FLASHBACKS, TO HELP THE AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND LORENA’S CONNECTION TO BILL. Yes, I hope so. I think the writers really do that well. It’s not necessarily so black-and-white. That’s one of the really brilliant things about the show. They show how vampires relate to humans, and vice versa: What parts of humanity do they maintain, and what parts do they not? And obviously some do so more than others. Bill fights really hard to maintain some of his humanity, and someone like Lorena doesn’t. There’s parts of her that are just not there anymore, nor does she want them to be, because that’s part of her human life, and that’s dead and gone now. But it’s interesting to me that love seems to be something that stays with them. Love and jealousy and greed and lust — those all carry into your vampire life.

Just in case seeing everyone all dolled up for the premiere last night didn’t wet your appetite for more, HBO has released 30 new Season 3 stills: Queen Sophie Ann and Nan Flannagan in Fangtasia (along with a pole…), a lot of very confused looking humans, a very scrumptious looking Bill in a fancy chair (and also in a tux), a shirtless Alcide, fangs galore (apparently in Sookie’s house), and so much food for fodder/speculating. Thanks Buzzsugar for sharing! Enjoy!
