alfre1 200x300 other projects alfre woodard Alfre Woodard, the award-winning actress who plays Lafayette’s schizophrenic mother, has landed a role in forthcoming film Twelve Years a Slave.  The movie is an adaptation of the 1853 book of the same name, by Solomon Northup, a New Yorker who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

There’s a lot of buzz around this movie, as it’s the third feature by acclaimed British director Steve McQueen, the man behind gritty Irish prison drama Hunger, and disturbing sex-addiction tale Shame.  Both of these movies starred Michael Fassbender, who is set to be reunited with McQueen in Twelve Years a Slave.  As well as Alfre Woodard and Michael Fassbender, the movie will star Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role, and Brad Pitt.

womenwarpeace other projects alfre woodard Tonight begins a five part series on PBS channels that highlights how women are affected nowadays in the global climate of modern warfare. Alfre Woodard will be narrating, along with Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton & Geena Davis. The series will air Tuesday nights until November 8th; check your local PBS listings.

Women, War & Peaceis a bold new five-part PBS television series challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain. The vast majority of today’s conflicts are not fought by nation states and their armies, but rather by informal entities: gangs and

warlords using small arms and improvised weapons. The series reveals how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with women becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. Yet they are simultaneously emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict. With depth and complexity, Women, War & Peace spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security, and reframing our understanding of modern warfare.
