Take A Stab: Reverend Steve Newlin

Season 4 ended with many jaw-dropping moments, but one of the biggest surprises would have to be the return of Fellowship of the Sun leader and notorious vamp-hater Steve Newlin…with added fangs! The Reverend’s reappearance in Bon Temps and the reasons behind it have raised many questions, so let’s take a stab at some of them.

412 SteveNewlinW 300x223 season 5Is he really a vampire?

Reverend Steve made his return to True Blood after an absence of nearly two seasons when he showed up at Jason Stackhouse’s door as the world’s most unlikely trick or treater, greeting a stunned Jason by popping fang. But has Steve really, ahem, grown a pair? Or are his retractable chompers part of a Halloween costume? I think it would certainly be more interesting if he has now taken on a ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ mentality towards the creatures he once wanted to eradicate, and is now using his new abilities to hunt down old enemies. But it’s also a possibility that we are being swerved, and Steve simply wanted to spook Jason a little before the true reason for his return is revealed.

If he is a vampire, who turned him?

This is probably the most interesting question to me, and one that has many possibilities. Steve’s anti-vampire Fellowship of the Sun church was based in Dallas, and he angered many of the city’s vampfolk when he orchestrated the bombing of Godric’s house that left many dead. So the vampires of Texas certainly have reason enough to capture the Rev and teach him the ultimate lesson by turning him into the very thing he despises. Another possibility is that Steve went to them willingly, wanting to be turned for some reason. Along with these two scenarios, will we then see the return of one of the Dallas vamps (maybe Godric’s underling Isabel?) or even a new vampire character from Texas?

Also possible is that another returning character, Russell Edgington, has been very busy indeed in the short time has been free and is setting whatever new plans he has in motion by turning Steve. Or it could be…absolutely anybody else! Somebody we already know, such as Nan Flanagan (one last grand PR move before her demise) or Pam, Eric or Bill (unlikely, but you never know). Or maybe one of the new vampire characters already announced to appear, or maybe even a complete random who we will never see! Read More »

Book 5: Dead as a Doornail

As you’re all probably aware, True Blood has been deviating further and further from the Southern Vampire Mystery novels on which it is based.  But Alan Ball has maintained that the show will continue to take inspiration from the books, so let’s look at the major plot points from Dead as a Doornail and ponder on what may or may not feature in season five…

Warning! Contains spoilers for those who have not read the books!

pantherjason 181x300 books

Panther Jason

1) The Shifter Shootings – Calvin Norris and Sam are two of the victims of the shifter-hating sniper, but since Calvin has already pegged it in the show, then he’s not a candidate to take a bullet in season five.  Sookie gets shot in the book too, but hell, she gets shot all the time.

2) Jason turns into a werepanther – Not going to happen!  Or is it?  Seemed like a bit of a waste to have all that build-up and then no panther Jason!  Perhaps we’ll just have a litter of half-Jason half-panther cubs instead?  And Jason is still dating Crystal in Dead as a Doornail, but that looks VERY unlikely, since she’s a rapist skank in True Blood.

3) The Pirate Vampire – Charles Twining!  He’s all piratey and has an eyepatch and says “Argghh” and everything!  But will he be joining the ranks of the undead in True Blood?  Since his presence in the novels is a result of Eric staking Longshadow, and that story is done and dusted in the show, with Bill as the culprit and Jessica the punishment, then Mr. Twining would have to have a different reason to show up in Bon Temps.

patrickdevins 218x300 books

Patrick Devins - Werewolf?

4) The werewolf packleader contest – A certainty for inclusion in the show.  But will it be Alcide’s pa in the ring, or Alcide himself?  And will the competition be refereed by weretiger Quinn, or will he be left out of the show, since Sookie already has so many men fawning over her?  And is Terry’s old army buddy Patrick the same Patrick Devins who was Hervaux Senior’s adversary in the packleader contest?

5) Tara and Mickey – Since Franklin in the show was an amalgamation of Franklin and Mickey from the books, then it looks as though we won’t be seeing Tara getting kidnapped by a psycho vampire again. On the other hand, Mickey’s maker is Salome, who we know for a fact will feature in the show, so perhaps she will be Franklin’s maker instead?

6) Sookie’s house burns down – well they only just cleared up all the Maenad mess, surely they don’t want to re-build that set all over again?  And Claudine certainly can’t be the one to save her, since she’s already kicked the bucket.

7) Sookie fretting over whether Eric will remember shagging her and the fact that she murdered Debbie – In the show, he already remembers all the juicy parts of his time with amnesia, but Sookie may still be concerned that he knows she murdered Debbie, and it’s very possible that we’ll get the scenario in which Eric disposes of Debbie’s body for Sookie.

DebbieDead 300x202 books

Alcide is gonna be pissed when he finds out.

8) Debbie’s family investigate her killing – No doubt Sookie murdering the she-wolf will have repercussions, so could we see the rest of the Pelt clan?  It’s been suggested that Debbie’s sister could be her twin, which would give the excellent Britt Morgan a chance to return to the show.

9) Sookie and Alcide sexual tension – This one’s another given for season five.  Though whether they’ll go on a werewolf funeral date or not remains to be seen.

10) Bill dates Selah Pumphrey, Sookie is jealous – Since Selah’s character and Portia’s were amalgamated for season four, this seems unlikely.   It’s probable though, that Bill will find another love interest, so will Sookie be consumed by jealousy, or is she over him now?

Please comment with your thoughts on which book five plotlines will feature in season five!

Take A Stab: Jason & Jessica & Poor Sad Hoyt

Jason Hoyt happy cristal norris

Former best friends Jason & Hoyt, before Jason told Hoyt "the news" PC: HBO

In Season 4, we saw best buddies Hoyt Fortenberry and Jason Stackhouse end their friendship over the news that Jason had sex with Hoyt’s ex, Jessica Hamby. True, Hoyt and Jessica were broken up, but we all know that Hoyt wouldn’t be able to let that slide. He & Jason have been friends for so long, he & Jessica had only been dating & living together for a year or two.

So what do you think is up for Hoyt? He’s lost his best friend and his girl this season. Not to mention he left his mama Maxine because she didn’t like him being with a vampire. Will he go back to her? Go back to Summer and her biscuits again? Join the Fellowship of The Sun now that he thinks vampires are “monsters”? Will he realize Jason really did try to stay away from Jessica and forgive him? His story seems pretty up in the air.

jJason Jess cristal norris

Jessica & Jason: Meant to be, or another crazy-ass relationship gone wrong for Jason?

As for Jessica: she seems pretty happy with the way things are going right now. She’s not tied down to one man, can eat who she wants, and have incredible sex with Jason when she wants. Will her sex arrangement with Jason stick, or will she want something more?

It’s hard to not see Jessica with Hoyt (since they were such a great couple in Season 2 & 3) but wants to explore of her vampire side and being tied to one man isn’t going to cut it. She sure has grown up a lot since she was made vampire in Season 1 – glad to see her relationship with Bill has improved and they can respect one another.

And finally: Jason. He has grown up a lot too – being much more responsible, being honest with Hoyt and actually being a good cop. True, he hurt his best friend (but in Ross’s defense on Friends, they were “on a break”). We all know he struggled to fight his desire for Jess, but she was too much for himto resist. He seemed offended when Jessica said, “Since when is Jason Stackhouse concerned with doing the right thing?” And what about all of those women he was forced to have sex with in Hotshot? Did he impregnate any of them? Will Mama Kitty Crystal come back for him? Will Jason become a panther after all? Will we have to see that dreadful place again? (I have to admit, I kind of like Timbo, but that’s it.)

Tell us what YOU think will happen to Hoyt, Jessica and Jason this season. Was it just the blood that Jessica gave him or is there really something deeper going on between those two? Are Hoyt’s words to Jason true? (‘You’ll never have something real with her or anybody because there’s something inside you that’s just missing.’) Who will Hoyt turn to? Will “Ghostdaddy” breed?

Terry Bellefleur and the ghost of Christmas past?

In our new segment, Take a Stab, we ponder what will happen to our favorite Bon Temps (and Shreveport!) residents in True Blood season 5. So pin on your sheriff badge and stir the gumbo pot,  because this here is the Bellefleur edition!

Terry Bellefleur

The last time we saw Terry B, he looked strangely shocked to be getting a hug from Patrick Devins, a Marine sergeant from his Iraq war days. Now, Private Bellefleur believed Patrick to be dead, so they haven’t spent any quality time with each other since the war -  so why has Patrick sought out his long lost buddy now?

We’ve been informed by one of the True Blood writers, Raelle Tucker, that “Patrick will bring trouble to Terry and Arlene. His arc has to do with Terry’s past coming back to haunt Bon Temps and Arlene and the life they’re trying to set up together.”

There are several ways we can interpret this. Did Patrick witness Terry doing something terrible back in the war days? Were they lovers? Or should we take Ms. Tucker’s comment literally and believe Patrick to be a ghost coming into Merlotte’s to haunt Terry & Arlene? And if he is, was Terry his murderer? Oh say it isn’t so!

Greater Family Ties

bill and bellefleurs andy bellefleur

Caroline Bellefleur, "Please tell me there was a bigger reason for me to bring that bible out than cock-blocking Portia."

What’s to become of the ancestral relationship between Bill Compton and the Bellefleurs? Will Bill tell Andy that he’s his gggggrandfather? Or (more likely) will Bill keep this information to himself? Maybe we’ll see more of Portia and she’ll explain to her brother all about their blood drinking progenitor. Either way, I believe that Andy will be just fine with Bill as a relative, after all, he did have an affinity for Bill way back in season 1, as did his cousin Terry.

But in the books, the Bellefleur connection was treated very differently with Sookie being jealous that Bill was helping them out financially. Since Bill & Sookie aren’t even together at this point, that storyline seems to be dead. So what will Bill’s Bellefleur connection bring to True Blood?

 The Mighty Andy Bellefleur

And then there’s Andy, oh Andy! There’s so much going on with Andy Bellefleur and I can’t wait to see what happens to him in season 5! At the end of last season, Andy seems to be off the V (thank the gods!) and is gently wooing Holly the Wiccan waitress. But this is True Blood and I’m pretty sure that this relationship won’t be all sweets and sunshine, because Andy Bellefleur was ravaged by a fairy!

22 andymaurella andy bellefleur

Maurella atop the handsome & muscular Andy Bellefleur (he's cutting back on carbs ya know).

Maurella found Andy in the woods and asked to be protected. After he acquiesced, she hopped aboard the Bellefleur express and rode it all the way to heaven. Now, I can totally understand why Maurella would be captivated by the Mighty Andy Bellefleur’s sexy swagger, but perhaps she had ulterior motives… maybe she’s a soldier in the army to harvest humans? Hmm?

So what do y’all think? Is Patrick Devins actually a dead guy? Will Bill’s Bellefleur connection amount to anything – or is it just another dropped storyline? And will Andy contribute the Bellefleur DNA to the fairy hybrid population?

Take A Stab: Tara Thornton – Undead Or Alive?

ohnotarasdead season 5

We don't believe for a second that this is the end for Tara.

In season four’s most shocking finale moment, major player Tara was seemingly killed off by a bullet that left her brain tissue decorating Sookie’s kitchen. Or was she? This is True Blood after all, so chances are this isn’t the last we’ll see of her. We’ve seen a bunch of people be healed by vampire blood, but is that magical elixir really powerful enough to cure a gaping hole in the head?  Fan speculation has been rife with talk of one of the vampires turning Tara into one of them. If that’s the case, then who is the likely candidate as maker? Bill saved her life in the cemetary, but he already has Jessica to deal with. Eric’s relationship with Pam is currently on the rocks, so maybe he’d like a substitute snarky lady vamp sidekick.  On the other hand, he attacked Tara and once kept Lafayette prisoner in his filthy basement, so maybe Tara wouldn’t be too thrilled to be his progeny. And then there’s Pam, who Eric has suggested should sire a baby vamp of her own, but we know she and Tara hate each other’s guts.

Or perhaps Tara will return as a ghost, and haunt Lafayette like a ghetto-fabulous Obi Wan Kenobi? Or maybe the True Blood writers have been watching too much Walking Dead, and she’ll come back as a zombie? Here’s where you can post your theories on the exact nature of Tara’s demise.

It’s a long cold wait until our next fix of True Blood, so until then let’s ponder what hijinks our favourite denizens of Bon Temps might get up to in season five… First up for us to muse over are Bill and Eric.
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERY STUFF!!
Team Bill Eric 300x169 bill compton

I'm a Bill/Eric shipper now!

Season four concluded with bitter rivals Bill and Eric looking like they were on the verge of embarking on an epic bromance.  Bill had accepted Eric’s fling with Sookie and hadn’t executed him when he had the chance, and Eric had sworn allegiance to his king.  Then they formed an undead tag-team and took out that interfering bitch Nan and her SWAT team.  Now this crime has left them in a bit of a pickle, because the Authority and American Vampire League want them executed for their handling of the Wiccan-gate crisis (even though it was Nan’s fault for not taking the threat seriously enough in the first place), and now with Nan’s death are going to be even more pissed at them.  Or will they?  Nan was a traitor after all, so maybe the Authority will be more forgiving? And perhaps they will take in to consideration the fact that Bill managed to save all the vampires in Louisiana (except poor Beulah Carter) from a fiery true death?  And there’s always the chance that they will see what a handsome pair our boys are and think the world would be a far sexier place with them in it.
