True Blood Season 3, episode 7, “Hitting the Ground” has been nominated for The Humane Society’s Genesis Award! Up for Best Dramatic Series, the episode calls attention to the cruelty of dog fighting.
“Media attention to animal protection issues has come a long way since the Genesis Awards was launched twenty-five years ago,” Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Hollywood office of the HSUS and executive producer of awards, said. “The fact that True Blood, a show about vampires, can illustrate the cruelty of dog fighting is a sure sign that a consciousness about animal concerns is permeating popular entertainment and culture like never before.”
Every year, The Genesis Awards pays tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that raise public awareness of animal issues. The 25th Genesis Awards will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles, CA.

Sam Merlotte as pit bull
As I knew the Mickens family was involved in dog fighting, I approached True Blood season 3, episode 7 with trepidation. How would this be shown? While I’m used to seeing blood on the show, I didn’t think I could handle doggie blood and pain. While they didn’t show any actual (albeit simulated) fighting, we did hear that horrible shot and see that ugly pile of bodies. But, once again, HBO brings another issue to the forefront.
Change.org outlined 10 ways that HBO’s True Blood got it right when portraying the heinous crime of dog fighting.
In theory, when a popular show decides to address an issue, it can help raise awareness. Or, it can end up diminishing — or even glorifying — the issue, and this is one show that’s not exactly known for taking the high road with violence. But here are 10 ways that True Blood got it right this time:

I know y’all were hoping to find CitizenErased, the Queen of Snark, returned for this week’s recap. She’s still off enjoying her winter holiday (crazy New Zealanders, having winter in the middle of the summer), so you’re stuck with me again. My apologies, fan(g)s, especially since I’m shaking my head incredulously when I think about Sunday’s episode. Are the writers taking Lafayette’s advice for pain-free living and washing down vicodins with big glasses of wine? It’s the only reasonable explanation I can come up with as to what happened. The show is in fact crazy, but it’s not a fun-crazy, as it has been in the past. It’s ridiculous. It’s absurd. It’s devolved into an eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, gratuitous goo and naked people smut-fest. If you feel differently, please feel free to try and convince me otherwise: I’m all ears. And I was totally remiss in forgetting this last week, but I have to credit my peeps for helping me clarify my thoughts and pick up on things I missed. Thank you Hajnalka, fulvia/nipsu, Fooled, and Twitche.

"William, I love you."
This week was another goo-fest. Is that what inspired the title, all the blood (among other things) hitting the ground? Lorena turned into a fountain (I’ll get to her final death in a moment), with Sookie tossing stringy bits into the air. There was the Magister’s gooey head splatting to the floor and erupting. There was Coot’s (slightly less) gooey head. (Alcide should’ve killed Debbie when he had the chance. Seriously, I’ve never seen what he saw in her, and we know we’ve not seen the end of that messed up little girl. Can they make her more trashy? I don’t see how, but I’m sure they’re going to try. I think I’d care more about Alcide if I knew something about him other than his unreasonable devotion to that bitch.) There was Tommy getting chewed on in the ring. There was Sookie getting chewed on in the truck. There was the were Alcide gushed with his truck. They must buy/make fake blood by the tanker truckload. The concept of “more isn’t always better, sometimes it’s just more” comes to mind.
This version of “Inside the Episode” features writer Brian Buckner and director John Dahl, who mentions they poured five gallons of blood on Steve for Lorena’s death. Messy.
This recap from HBO starts out with my favorite death scene, to date, on True Blood.
