Episode 12: Beyond Here Lies Nothin’

I’d Wear Him Like a Scrunchie

In la grande finale of True Blood, a gas leak/aliens/LSD/bad booze explains all conveniently, Lafayette is the sexiest maid of honour, Sam the bull is kinda sweet and cuddly, Sookie wants those zombies off her lawn pronto, Bill is as romantic as Edward ‘Pussy’ Cullen except better because he actually puts out, Eric gets bossed around by a crazy bitch for a change and ding, dong…the maenad bitch is dead. Happy dance! Plus very predictable cliffhanger.  Adieu, my favourite freakshow!

Well, Season Two is finally over, and I feel …exhausted? Sorta glad of the rest so I can process it all and maybe argue with myself out loud on the street like Mad Cat Lady from The Simpsons as to whether it was better or worse than Season 1?  Hilarious, totally infuriating, very saggy and draggy in parts, with way too much time spent on boring shit like endless orgies, mythological mumbo jumbo, Tara and Eggs, and church geeks being well, brainwashed smiley douchebags. It was also heartbreaking, horny, fiendishly clever, very moving, downright stupid and incredibly manipulative.

Dead Can Dance & Sing: The Musican, Starring Vampire Bill Compton

Dead Can Dance & Sing: The Musical, Starring Vampire Bill Compton

Characters rose in our esteem, and fell. Book readers got pissed as if Shakespeare was being destroyed or something (seriously, they need to chill). There was bad make up and bad clothes and bad dialogue. Bill sung and played the piano and danced, which should be ludicrous but actually kind of worked, and I HATE musicals. Eric was consistently a devious, homewrecking villain but he did it in such a charming, uber hot manner that everyone loved him anyway. Plus he cried, and chicks dig sensitive bastards, y’know? All of the characters that pissed us off the most ended up dead, which was fitting, and the ones we love the most ended up in more misery and danger for us to worry about. A show vaguely based on silly books about vampires that involves this much emotional investment must be the most amazing thing on television, ever, and yes, despite my immense list of grumbles, I really think it is. I have given the writers and the actors endless amounts of snark over the last few months, but it’s only cos I’m rooting for them all.

Old, borrowed & blue - Who's who? You decide

With a heavy (NOT edible) heart and a bloody tear in my eye I shall begin to retell the story of the finale. Sookie is screaming her tits off yet again at bug eyed Lafayette and the (utterly pointless) ostrich egg on Gran’s bed. Vile Eggs and Tara scuttle off downstairs with the stupid egg while Laffy barks at Sookie to get naked and put a cheap, scratchy looking dress on. She reluctantly does and is frogmarched downstairs to join the bridal party. If she hadn’t done enough to trash Sook’s cherished heirlooms, Maryanne is now wearing Gran’s wedding dress. The key zombie witches are gathered around squeeing with excitement, and Eggs annoys me even more than usual by grinning like a retard. Fortunately Maryanne sends them all outside so she can quiz Sookie about what she is, as she ain’t human clearly with that awesome white light zappy thing going on. ‘I’m a waitress, what the fuck are YOU?’ Best Sookie line in like forever, I just love it when our gal swears proper.

Alan Ball Interview: Finale Postmortem & Season Three Teasers

By Lividity on September 14th, 2009 at 12:24 pm | 4 Comments »

alan-ball-true-bloodMichael Ausiello just had a post-season finale interview with Alan Ball. Many hints about what is going to happen in season three of True Blood, some questions answered and you’ll never believe who Alan says kidnapped Bill.

::::May Contain Spoilers:::

Some folks were surprised by the structure of the finale and your decision to wrap up the Maryann story in the first 30 minutes.
ALAN BALL:
I try to look at the show as basically almost like it’s a novel, and each episode is a chapter. I guess I’m influenced by the fact that when I watch TV shows, I watch the [DVD] boxed sets. Ultimately, it’s just organically the way it worked out. And the season finale last year was very similar.

Why wasn’t there more Eric in the finale?
BALL:
There is a reason for not seeing Eric in the last part of the episode, but if I explain it, I’ll be [giving away] too much.

Will he be prominent next season?
BALL:
Yes. Although, when I saw your[ latest posting], for a moment I thought, we’re going to have to kill Eric, because you are the man. I thought wow, I had many seasons of Eric planned but I guess I’ll have to off him. [Laughs]

Speaking of which, are you surprised at how passionate the Sookie/Eric fans are?
BALL:
Yes. I try not to get involved in that because it just sort of — it’s too confusing. I don’t want it to influence what the show is. Personally, I’m like, yes, Eric’s hot, but beyond that he’s dangerous, and I don’t know if he’d love anybody besides himself. What’s the appeal there? The bad boy? The danger?

Nelsan Ellis talks about ‘True Blood’s’ finale and what’s next for Lafayette

Lafayette

Nelsan Ellis chats a bit about Lafayette’s mom and working with Alexander Skarsgard. We also find out that Nelsan has read the Sookie Stackhouse books and that he watches True Blood episodes 20 times. Hey! Just like us!

As the wild and largely enjoyable second season of HBO’s “True Blood” came to a close on Sunday, most of the residents of Bon Temps, La., wanted to put the insanity that had gripped the town behind them.

No one was more interested in sweeping things under the rug than Lafayette Reynolds, the cook at Merlotte’s, Bon Temps’ favorite watering hole.

Like most of the people in Bon Temps, Lafayette had fallen under the sway of the charismatic Maryann (Michelle Forbes), who was actually a creature known as a maenad.

Orgies: Just another day at work

Michelle Forbes

Michelle Forbes

Although the time of reckoning is nigh for Maryann, Michelle Forbes continues to delight. In this latest interview, Michelle shares comments on how orgies were just another day at the office with a pervy bunny. Yep. That’s right I said bunny.

As Bon Temps’s resident maenad, Michelle Forbes has been freaking out True Blood fans since she appeared naked in the road with a pig at the end of season 1. But, “I’m really very nice,” she tells PEOPLE. “Everyone’s getting so scared when they meet me now. I could kill Alan Ball.”

How was this role described to you?
It just mentioned the more basic points of what a maenad is … That women of this sort tended to run through the woods tearing children and animals to pieces, and they were known as the “wild ones” and the “raving ones.” That was pretty much it.

Did that appeal to you?
It did! It didn’t necessarily line up with what was on the page and that was the exciting thing that sort of gets the hair on the back of your neck standing up. You start looking for a shovel because you just want to start digging to figure out what this riddle is all about.

What do you think of the current vampire craze?
In this age of vampires, what I love about True Blood the most is that it’s a post-modern take on it.  Charlaine Harris and Alan Ball turned that whole mythology upside-down … It’s not just about vampires. It’s about a lot of different things. And that’s what I love about the show … It’s great to see the interaction between all these different creatures and humans.

Intimate dancing

Intimate dancing: Real or a Dream?

For all you people that don’t do the Facebook. Here’s what the “Official True Blood Fan Page” is asking. And I find it quite curious how the answers are coming in. What would your answers be?  (Also I just wanted to post this picture again, because it’s hot – and it’s not a dream yet.)

WHO’S GOING TO SAY THE FOLLOWING QUOTES IN SUNDAY NIGHT’S FINALE?

#1: “You could be my social, physical, or intellectual inferior, but your chances are equal to mine. It’s the perfect antidote to this world, where things such as superiority and inferiority do matter.”

#2: “Just get me in close with that b*tch and I will take her down like a house of cards.”

#3: “I wanted to thank you for trusting me with your life. That couldn’t have been easy.”

Which True Blood character is #1?
Which True Blood character is #2?

Stephen Moyer: Working with Anna Paquin a ‘Glorious Luxury’

By Lividity on September 11th, 2009 at 2:16 pm | 5 Comments »

Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer

Speaking about the season two finale of True Blood, Stephen Moyer  says there “will be blood, cliffhangers & resolutions.” He also hints at something so crazy that even if he told us, we would not believe him. Oh really?

Playing a vampire on a hit show at a time when vampires are taking over pop culture is a “pretty sweet feeling,” according to True Blood’s Stephen Moyer. But working with his fiancée Anna Paquin is a real “glorious luxury.”

“We are very relaxed together on set, off set and that can only help with some of the things that we get asked to do,” Moyer says of their job, which often includes blood-sucking sex scenes.

Now happily engaged, the costars previously kept their relationship a secret on the set of HBO’s supernatural hit.

“We were very, very cagey,” says Moyer, 39. “We kept tabs on our own relationship, let alone telling anybody because we were very concerned about how it would play out given that anybody who signed up to do one of these series signs for seven years. So, you don’t take a decision like that lightly.”

Bill & Sookie

Bill & Sookie

As the couple, who play Civil War veteran vampire Bill Compton and sweet clairvoyant waitress Sookie Stackhouse, realized there was something serious going, they decided to bring their relationship into the light of day.

“If there is an inevitability to something and there is absolutely no way that that thing can be halted, then you have to go along with it,” Moyer says. “When we realized it wasn’t just some fickle infatuation or chemistry or whatever, we were able to, months later, tell everybody that we were working with.”

There’s reason they’re called actors, apparently. “Everybody was shocked,” he said of sharing their news with the cast and crew, “so I think we’d done a good job of hiding it.”

As for True Blood’s season 2 finale, which airs Sunday (9 p.m. EST) on HBO, Moyer says there will be blood — and cliffhangers and resolutions.

“It’s everything that you would want from a season finale,” he says. “But I don’t even want to make a hint at something because it’s so f–ing crazy. I could tell you something that’s going to happen, but you just won’t believe me, so it’s almost pointless.”

Alan Ball Discusses Season Finale/Season 3 of True Blood

By Lividity on September 11th, 2009 at 1:48 pm | 3 Comments »

OK everyone, Alan Ball is giving out a few spoilers about Season 3 of True Blood. Read this interview if you want *some* idea on how closely the show will follow the books next year. [Thanks RC!]

alanballOne of the most talked about shows of the summer is True Blood, HBO’s supernatural series about vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, and all those eerie things we find both fascinating and horrifying.

With the season two finale right around the corner — “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’” airs Sunday at 9 PM ET on HBO — it’s a great time to catch up with series creator Alan Ball (pictured, with Michelle Forbes, Rutina Wesley, and Deborah Ann Woll at the TCA awards in August). Read on for his thoughts on the future of Maryann, a Sookie/Bill pairing, and even a few spoilers on season three.

If you want to look at the full transcript of the wide-ranging interview, click here. The edited version starts after the jump.

I asked my TV Squad readers what they wanted me to ask you, and one of their main questions involves the books. Some feel the show doesn’t follow the books closely enough. Your thoughts on that?

True Blood - Sookie and BillI think a book and a television show are two different mediums. If I were to follow the books, it would be all about Sookie, because Sookie narrates the story, and the other characters would rarely even show up. Jason would come into the bar and hug her in an attempt to make people think he loves his sister so he can pick somebody up. Tara wouldn’t even have existed until this season, and she’d be white. Lafayette would be dead.

So all I can say to those people is, it’s based on the books, but it’s not a literal adaptation of the books. I’m doing what I think is the best way to turn that story into a television show. Also, if I just stuck to the books, there would be no surprises. You could go pick up the books anywhere and know exactly what was coming. So personally, I don’t see any benefit of making a carbon copy of the books for TV.

Will Eric be a bigger part of the show in season three? Will he and Sookie get together?

I can’t tell you if they’re going to get together, because that’s going to ruin the anticipation. But, if you’ve been following season two, he’s definitely been doing things to make her more vulnerable and more susceptible to him. And he does want her, he’s just not sure why. I think it’s deeper than just, “I want her because Bill Compton has her.” Although that’s part of it, because Eric is a total alpha-dog.
