This is essential to S4 why?

XFinity asked Alan Ball which episodes are worth going back and checking out before season 4 begins. He gave them a list of nine and the reasons why the episodes are integral. He said, “It’s tough because so much has happened before, and I also have this season and parts of next season in my head too”

So without further ado, here are Alan Ball’s most essential True Blood episodes for us to watch in preparation for S4:

Season 1, Episode 2
“This is the first time Sookie (Anna Paquin) drank Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) blood, and the first time they kissed.”

Season 1, Episode 5
“This has the Civil War flashback and told how Bill was made. Also, it’s where Gran was found dead.”

Season 2, Episode 4
“In this episode, Maryann (Michelle Forbes) threw Tara a (Rutina Wesley) birthday party and you finally got a sense of what she was up to.” Read More »

Alan Ball’s Comments on Season 2

I know this can be considered “old news” but if you are like me, you like any news about True Blood that you can get. Life Story magazine put out an issue mostly about Twilight, but there are 6 pages of an episode guide to Season 2, complete with comments by Alan Ball.

Alan Ball’s comments about episode 209: “I Will Rise Up”. “My favorite episode of [the] season. I love the whole story between Eric and Godric, and Sookie gets to see Eric’s human side. Then there’s the whole choice by Godric to move on; his attitude of, ‘I’m done and I want to embrace whatever is going to happen to me now, even if it means oblivion, even if it means the end.’ That last sequence was tough to shoot, because we shot part of it on a building rooftop in Los Angeles – where we basically had 20 minutes to get it because of the light – and then we shot part of it on a stage with green screen, then we went to Dallas and shot background plates so that you would have recognizable landmarks. Then there were all the special effects technology questions of how we were going to have Godric go up in flames. So it was tough, but I thought it paid off.”

NAACP awardsAlexander Woo, True Blood writer extraordinaire, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series for season 2 episode 12, Beyond Here Lies Nothin. Sadly, he lost to Shonda Rhimes, creator and writer for Grey’s Anatomy. Wait, when’s the last time anyone actually watched that show? I guess it’s still good? Anyone know?

I’d Wear Him Like a Scrunchie

In la grande finale of True Blood, a gas leak/aliens/LSD/bad booze explains all conveniently, Lafayette is the sexiest maid of honour, Sam the bull is kinda sweet and cuddly, Sookie wants those zombies off her lawn pronto, Bill is as romantic as Edward ‘Pussy’ Cullen except better because he actually puts out, Eric gets bossed around by a crazy bitch for a change and ding, dong…the maenad bitch is dead. Happy dance! Plus very predictable cliffhanger.  Adieu, my favourite freakshow!

Well, Season Two is finally over, and I feel …exhausted? Sorta glad of the rest so I can process it all and maybe argue with myself out loud on the street like Mad Cat Lady from The Simpsons as to whether it was better or worse than Season 1?  Hilarious, totally infuriating, very saggy and draggy in parts, with way too much time spent on boring shit like endless orgies, mythological mumbo jumbo, Tara and Eggs, and church geeks being well, brainwashed smiley douchebags. It was also heartbreaking, horny, fiendishly clever, very moving, downright stupid and incredibly manipulative.

Dead Can Dance & Sing: The Musical, Starring Vampire Bill Compton

Characters rose in our esteem, and fell. Book readers got pissed as if Shakespeare was being destroyed or something (seriously, they need to chill). There was bad make up and bad clothes and bad dialogue. Bill sung and played the piano and danced, which should be ludicrous but actually kind of worked, and I HATE musicals. Eric was consistently a devious, homewrecking villain but he did it in such a charming, uber hot manner that everyone loved him anyway. Plus he cried, and chicks dig sensitive bastards, y’know? All of the characters that pissed us off the most ended up dead, which was fitting, and the ones we love the most ended up in more misery and danger for us to worry about. A show vaguely based on silly books about vampires that involves this much emotional investment must be the most amazing thing on television, ever, and yes, despite my immense list of grumbles, I really think it is. I have given the writers and the actors endless amounts of snark over the last few months, but it’s only cos I’m rooting for them all.

Old, borrowed & blue - Who's who? You decide

With a heavy (NOT edible) heart and a bloody tear in my eye I shall begin to retell the story of the finale. Sookie is screaming her tits off yet again at bug eyed Lafayette and the (utterly pointless) ostrich egg on Gran’s bed. Vile Eggs and Tara scuttle off downstairs with the stupid egg while Laffy barks at Sookie to get naked and put a cheap, scratchy looking dress on. She reluctantly does and is frogmarched downstairs to join the bridal party. If she hadn’t done enough to trash Sook’s cherished heirlooms, Maryanne is now wearing Gran’s wedding dress. The key zombie witches are gathered around squeeing with excitement, and Eggs annoys me even more than usual by grinning like a retard. Fortunately Maryanne sends them all outside so she can quiz Sookie about what she is, as she ain’t human clearly with that awesome white light zappy thing going on. ‘I’m a waitress, what the fuck are YOU?’ Best Sookie line in like forever, I just love it when our gal swears proper.

Alan Ball Interview: Finale Postmortem & Season Three Teasers

alan ball true blood alan ballMichael Ausiello just had a post-season finale interview with Alan Ball. Many hints about what is going to happen in season three of True Blood, some questions answered and you’ll never believe who Alan says kidnapped Bill.

::::May Contain Spoilers:::

Some folks were surprised by the structure of the finale and your decision to wrap up the Maryann story in the first 30 minutes.
ALAN BALL:
I try to look at the show as basically almost like it’s a novel, and each episode is a chapter. I guess I’m influenced by the fact that when I watch TV shows, I watch the [DVD] boxed sets. Ultimately, it’s just organically the way it worked out. And the season finale last year was very similar.

Why wasn’t there more Eric in the finale?
BALL:
There is a reason for not seeing Eric in the last part of the episode, but if I explain it, I’ll be [giving away] too much.

Will he be prominent next season?
BALL:
Yes. Although, when I saw your[ latest posting], for a moment I thought, we’re going to have to kill Eric, because you are the man. I thought wow, I had many seasons of Eric planned but I guess I’ll have to off him. [Laughs]

Speaking of which, are you surprised at how passionate the Sookie/Eric fans are?
BALL:
Yes. I try not to get involved in that because it just sort of — it’s too confusing. I don’t want it to influence what the show is. Personally, I’m like, yes, Eric’s hot, but beyond that he’s dangerous, and I don’t know if he’d love anybody besides himself. What’s the appeal there? The bad boy? The danger?

Nelsan Ellis chats a bit about Lafayette’s mom and working with Alexander Skarsgard. We also find out that Nelsan has read the Sookie Stackhouse books and that he watches True Blood episodes 20 times. Hey! Just like us!

As the wild and largely enjoyable second season of HBO’s “True Blood” came to a close on Sunday, most of the residents of Bon Temps, La., wanted to put the insanity that had gripped the town behind them.

No one was more interested in sweeping things under the rug than Lafayette Reynolds, the cook at Merlotte’s, Bon Temps’ favorite watering hole.

Like most of the people in Bon Temps, Lafayette had fallen under the sway of the charismatic Maryann (Michelle Forbes), who was actually a creature known as a maenad. Read More »
