Anna Paquin as Irena Sendler
Back in the day, long ago, well … maybe not so long ago, April of 2009, Anna Paquin portrayed Irena Sendler in a made for TV movie titled “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler.” Anna was even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Film for her role. Just eight years earlier in 2001 Stephen Moyer portrayed Simha “Kazik” Rotem in a made for TV movie called “Uprising.” What do they have in common? Both actors played the role of a hero in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWll. I wonder if Irena and Kazik knew each other or of each other while in the Ghetto. And how ironic is it that Steve and Anna played such similar roles in the same city and then ended up married years later? Or am I just a romantic at heart?
Irena’s Story: During WWII, Irena got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ‘ulterior motive’ … She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews (being German). Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried, and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and reunite the family. Most had been gassed. The children she was able to help were either placed into foster family homes or adopted.
Kazik’s Story: Kazik is one of the few surviving Warsaw Ghetto fighters known for their struggle against the Germans during WWII. Spies from the ghetto told young resistance fighters like Kazik that the trains traveling from the ghetto to the camps were leaving the camps empty. Kazik and other Zionist youth group members decided to revolt in April of 1943. Kazik and other Zionist youth group members decided to revolt and hence the beginning of The Warsaw Uprising. With mines, grenades, pistols, and Molotov cocktails, Kazik and the other Jewish fighters attacked German soldiers who came to attack their stronghold within the ghetto. After the initial attack Kazik and some other surviving fighters tunneled outside the ghetto walls. Kazik could have chosen to save himself, but he and the others who escaped decided to return to the ghetto through the sewers to save the remaining fighters. Kazik continued to haunt Warsaw in and around the Ghetto for two years until Warsaw was liberated.

While at the opening night gala for the Los Angeles Philharmonic last night, Steve took the time to answer a few questions.
First, when asked what he and Anna’s favorite date night activity is, he said they just like to lounge with their pets. ”Really, sitting in, playing with the dogs and doing the normal stuff at home, truthfully,” he told reporters.
But when asked what wife Anna’s sexiest quality is, Stephen misheard and thought he was being asked what his sexiest attribute is.
“I give…no, I can’t!” he joked before dashing inside Disney Concert Hall.
No wonder we love this man …..
We would like to bring your attention to a sad and heart-wrenching story regarding the Darnell family. Their father, 47-year-old Kirk Darnell, died suddenly of a heart attack exactly eight months ago. Recently, on August 30th, their mother, 43-year-old Missy Darnell and Genevieve Darnell their 10-year-old sibling, were struck and killed by a car while walking to a local convenience store.

In 8 short months, this tragedy has left the 4 remaining children without parents and mourning the loss of a sibling. Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, who are deeply saddened by this tragic event, are supporting this cause and have asked us to reach out and help in anyway we can.
