I got a kick out of this fake Allied ‘Training Newsreel’ postmortem regarding Unternehmen Werwolf (HBO made yet another gaffe in the name of the Operation. It is NOT ‘Betrieb Werwolf’. It is ‘Unternehmen Werwolf’). As long as ignorant people do not accept this ‘newsreel’ as authentic (and God help us, but such bovine brains are out there in the millions), it is a fun effort.

The Truth, however, is actually far more interesting and dark than Ball & Co. could ever dream up. The name, by the by, was primarily adapted in tribute to Hermann Löns’ famous 1910 chronicle of the Thirty Years War entitled ‘Der Wehrwolf’ (of which I own a copy). Löns was an extremely popular figure within the Far-Right elite of the NSDAP and a particular favourite of Himmler. As Unternehmen Werwolf was initially started as an SS Operation, Himmler was pleased with the choice of name. Ironically, when Himmler was captured by the Allies and promptly committed suicide, his body was carefully and secretly buried in an isolated, unmarked grave in an attempt to prevent it from becoming a Nazi shrine. He is interred on the wilds of the Lüneburger Heide… as is Löns.

They’ve done the fake news clips before, and fake documentaries. For whatever reason, maybe it’s just the subject matter, they seemed better executed than this one. *shrugs* I liked the one last week with the wolves better.

It must also be noted that Unternehmen Werwolf was not the only user of the Wolfsangel. It was a popular sigil, and variations were used throughout the Third Reich by factions such as the HJ (Hitler Youth) and the Dutch SS. The most notable user of the Wolfsangel was the Second Waffen-SS Division Das Reich. The second Waffen-SS unit to be formed, Das Reich’s origins were the SS-VT Division. It fought on both fronts during the war (including the Battle of the Bulge, Unternehmen Barbarossa (the invasion of the Soviet Union), and the battles of Kharkov und Kursk); however, it may be most infamous for its role in the massacre of an entire village at Oradour-sur-Glane.

I don’t know, perhaps it is the very significant subject matter; but part of me does not feel at all comfortable creating phony newsreel footage of this time period (not with all of the wacko Holocaust deniers, conspiracy theorists, and White Supremacists lurking out there who already accuse actual newsreels and footage of being faked). I’m trying to relax and just go with the fun of it; however, both perpetrators and victims remain alive. This is not a joke or something to be taken lightly. I feel rather sullied.

“For the SS Mann there is ONE absolute principal: he must be honest, decent, loyal, and friendly to persons of our own blood, and to no one else…” — Heinrich Himmler, Reichsfuehrer-SS
